The Summer of "Anu": In a summer once every five years, demons in the mysterious Tower of Druaga lose their powers due to the magic spell cast by a god named "Anu". King Gilgamesh, ruler of the kingdom Uruk, uses the appearance of demons as an excuse to invade the tower and find out the construct's secrets. As 80 years passed, the Uruk army managed to fight back the demons and built a fortress city and safe haven on the very first floor of Druaga - Metz Kier. Thus begins the story of a warrior named Gil who, finding companions along the way, embarks on a quest for the fabled Blue Crystal Rod, a powerful artifact rumored to be in the highest floor of Druaga. However, other competitors, including the kingdom of Uruk itself, want the treasure, all for their own reasons.

Based on a 1980s RPG game released by Namco, Tower of Druaga focuses on several parties of characters trying to ascend the titular tower of the series to slay the demon god Druaga and claim a magical artifact called the Blue Crystal Rod. Like video game-based anime of its ilk, the series takes it plot rather seriously at most points and the characters have their archetypal roles to fulfill that dabble into elements of both RPG games and anime. The series usually dabbles into comedy at points thanks to Jil's clumsiness or breaking the fourth wall through referencing the Tower of Druaga video game. While the Tower of Druaga nods are funny, it does get in the way of the serious bits that the anime attempts to portray though this isn't saying much as the characters are too limited in depth to get any kind of attachment to. Aegis of Uruk does toss in a plot twist in its finale seemingly as bait for those who cared enough for the series to press on into Sword of Uruk. While I'll press on with the second season somewhere down the line as I own both seasons of Tower of Druaga personally, my expectations aren't really too high for expecting much improvement for it compared to Aegis of Uruk.
