In "Chapter L", Takemoto asks Mayama and Morita about a vacant room in the apartment building, and is told about an amazing senpai named "Lohmeyer". "He was a wonderful person" Mayama explains, "serene as the northern plains... powerful, lustrous, and... juicy"? Likewise, Takemoto later notices a poster advertising a "Legendary Hero Search" and Mayama tells him about a costume-wearing theme park employee who once held that title; a person with "manliness flowing out of him, even when covered with fur". "Chapter F" involves "the story of the Fujiwara Design Office before Mayama-kun began working there". The mischievious Miwako buys a "ridiculous" shirt for fellow worker Yamazaki as a prank--and he is immediately acclaimed "The King of Fashion". Miwako cannot tolerate a failed practical joke, and thus begins a never-ending search for tasteless clothing...

Through 1 episode...

For Chapter L, the first story regarding Lohmeyer-senpai (aka: Ham-senpai) had me in stitches as the guy remember the senpai who used to bring home the ham literally. The guys crying out in the night (in English), "Ham-senpai! Come back!" was just so nutty and funny to me. The 2nd story about the legendary hero wasn't as good, but had a couple of amusing moments. Actually, it mostly made me want to fast-forward.

In Chapter F, we get to see the work place of Mayama before he started with Miwako-san desperately trying to pull off a practical joke on Yamazaki with shirts, but failing. Then (taking place after Morito returns from the U.S. in the TV series), Mayama and Hanamoto-sensei play a game of shogi. Hanamoto-sensei wonders why Mayama doesn't go to dating parties, and learns that once Ayu got invited, it was all over for him. At the same time, Miwako-san is still trying to pull off the clothing practical joke on Yamazaki, but she fails when she ends up dressing him like green-jacket Lupin III. ^_^

As two episodes go, they are mostly fun, but as stated, add nothing to the story and would have been completely out of place in the TV series. But as extras for the DVD, they are OK. And I did get some laughs, so that's not a bad thing.

Bottom line: Strictly for fans of the TV series and worth a rent.

Rent Stretch [series:1410#628]
Going in, I wondered which special I should watch first, chapter F or chapter L? It turns out that it doesn't really matter, these specials have nothing to do with the ongoing plot of the series--if they had been included within the TV series, they would have been "filler" episodes (and the only episodes of that type). For example, "Lohmeyer" is a completely original character who appears only in Chapter L. The TV series episodes have no titles, they are known only as "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc--labelling these "Chapters" with letters rather than numbers is indicative of their having a silly, humorous spin, with little of the usual romantic drama. That being said, if you are a fan of Honey & Clover you must watch them, because they are hilarious. As soon as the premise of Chapter F was announced, I could only exclaim "Uh-oh!" to myself, in anticipation of the wacky comedy that was certain to come (and it did). The antics of Nomiya, Yamazaki and Miwako could easily support a TV series of their own (hint!). These specials are perfect for those who can't get enough of Honey & Clover, and who especially appreciate the show's quirky style of comedy; but surely anyone would find them amusing. However, it would be best to have watched enough of the TV series to become familiar with the basic characters, plus Mayama's coworkers at Fujiwara.

My favorite line: "W-W-What's wrong, Mayama-san? You've turned into a shoujo manga character!" --Takemoto
