Shindou and his little sister Saya were among the few survivors of a massacre that took over three hundred lives in a public housing complex. While the trauma of the event is part of the past, Shindou is troubled by repeated nightmares – dreams filled with images of monsters, blood and a red-haired woman with a sword. Now some five years later, Saya is working with local traffic police and Shindou has just become a rookie investigator for Tokki: The City’s Special Mobile Investigation Force. While investigating a number of bloody murders committed by a serial killer, Shindou and other members of the Tokki team are attacked by a group of possessed humans who cannot stopped with guns. It is only when a group of sword-wielding members of the elite Tokko division arrive and kill the monsters, does Shindou begin to wonder about his dreams and the truth behind massacre that took the lives of both of his parents.

Tokko attempts to be a horror-action title in its focus on police detective Shindou and his interactions with a mysterious group of demon slayers known as Tokko. While a potentially unique premise on paper, the series suffers from a good number of flaws that hamper its potential between its subpar animation, some attempts at horror looking ridiculous in their execution, making too much of an attempt at trying to look cool with the attire of Tokko's members, uninspiring characters, and leaving quite a bit of its plot unclear as such where it lacks a clear ending with the demon threat still at large. Overall, a rather forgettable title of the 2000s that leaves little impression for viewers.

I watched the entire series and ended up saying, "That's it???" I was a bit disappointed by the lack of length this series had. If it was a question of lack of ideas, so be it. However, there should really be no excuse to have a promising series get cut down to thirteen episodes. This is the violent anime that I can enjoy if it was a bit longer. The story is about Shindou, a rookie cop, and his sister, Saya. Both of them were survivors of a horrid massacre in the apartment building they used to live in. Years afterwards, Shindou becomes an investigator for the sole purpose to solve his parents brutal murder. I'll save the rest of the plot for you to watch.

In short (no pun intended), the series only lasts thirteen episodes. The harsh thing about short anime series like this one is that the something down the line will be cut off and will lead to some parts of the story being either explained near the end for a climax, in mid-story and underdeveloped, or just put off. In this case, some of the stories behind the characters are mid-story and ended up being underdeveloped. It felt rushed and the story felt a bit empty. The only saving grace was the animation. If it wasn't for the decent effort on that, the rank would be around "Avoid". IMHO, if this series was a bit longer and more developed, I would've rank this as one of my top 10 anime series.

Unevaluated Jan-Chan [series:1350#967]
Episode #5 is out on this very interesting & very bloody horror-thriller series. Lots of strangeness, hell-sent-demons and bloody violence. This series has my interest … (for the moment – at least).

Fansub title is TOKKO
