Being the first Korean animated title I’ve had a chance of completing, I have to admit this was quite the worthwhile watch. The movie is essentially a coming-of-age, light-hearted drama about young boy Nam-woo coming to grips with changes in his life, in particular his close friend Jun-ho moving away and his mother dating another man following the death of his father. The movie does enough at highlighting the various changes in Nam-woo’s life, not counting the two major issues above, such as awkward interactions with girls in school and seeing an abandoned lighthouse he usually hangs out in being closed down to get destroyed. As the movie progresses, he comes to accept these changes through Mari and the fantasy world he is able to enter in. The world comes to be both his escape from his current doubts and a source of growth for the boy as he comes to realize things can’t always be the same.|
The visuals to the movie were quite impressive as CG animation was used in rendering the city landscapes and the fantasy world that Nam-woo enters. Both settings have a good amount of visual detail with subdued colors used in portraying the mundane feel of everyday life that is experienced in this movie. The character designs to this movie are a bit of a mixed bag. While the physical features look better defined with character designs compared to what you would normally see out of most Japanese animation, especially with facial designs, the details are a bit on the simple side.
Nonetheless, My Beautiful Girl Mari was a worthwhile watch for my first Korean animated title with a positive message that is developed rather well and makes effective use of CG animation in rendering its settings.

I just rented the movie today but it is a definite buy I want to add to my list of DVDs. I want to buy. It is a very suttle love story about a young boy who meets this Mari and she helps him cope through the rough spots. We all have someone like that or will meet someone along the way and they will help us through the rough spots in life. A beautiful animated story and a definite one to see. If you just need to kick back and relax you can do it with this movie. It is a Grande Prix winner and noted as Best Picture Film.
