The talented artist Yo Hinomura is brainwashed into becoming an assassin in the employ of the sinister crime syndicate known as “The 108 Dragons.” Yet his conversion into a heartless killer is incomplete: he manages to retain some small link to his humanity, epitomized by the silent tears he sheds for his victims. Filled with bold images of uncompromising violence, lively sensuality and pulse-pounding action, Crying Freeman remains the quintessential example of mature storytelling told through stylish animation.

[OVA, 1988-94, 6 episodes, 52 min; based on the manga series created by Ryoichi Ikegami]

There is also a 100-minute 1995 live-action film that was produced in Canada and is based on the Japanese manga story. For some strange reason, ↗Crying Freeman (the film) was never released in the US.

This was quite a mess. Crying Freeman attempts to be an action-drama with depicting Yo's forced training into an assassin and acquiring a lover in the form of Emu, but the potential for such a story falls flat after its first episode as Yo settles into becoming the head of the crime syndicate he is an assassin for and the series instead becomes a series of episodic stories where Yo and the 108 Dragons clash with rival crime syndicates attempting to intrude upon their territory. Since the series is more focused on its episodic plots and showing off as much T&A, sex scenes and brutal violence as it can, this leads any potential at meaningful character developments or exploration of Crying Freeman's crime world to take a back seat to the mentioned issues highlighted, and attempts at drama over character fights and deaths come across as shallow and sometimes laughable (one notable instance for this reviewer being a female gang leader falling to her death while nude, having an orgasm from the experience and just getting stabbed in one of her breasts by Yo). Not helping matters for the series is that the visuals for it are showing their age with their 80s drawing style. Overall, Crying Freeman is not much different from other old-school violent and sexually-charged anime of its ilk in favoring objectionable content over any attempt at substance with its plot. Definitely avoid this unless you get enjoyment out of seeing bad-quality anime titles.

Art wise, it is alright, even for when it was made, it was just alright...nudity, and some explicit scenes... sure...but this actually has a story...a story about a pottery maker and his rise to power in a crime syndicate...although not for everyone, if you want an adult anime, with some action, the story alone should hold you over to complete the series. Also i feel the art regresses as the story went along...but again, you would watch this for a good story, not art...

At first, I was highly skeptical of this title. I thought that this was going to be some weird anime which would lose me from the very start. I watched it from the beginning and I couldn't stop! The story itself is about the rise of an assassin and how he evolved from being a ruthless, cold-blooded killer to the top man of the 108 Dragons. The animation was pretty tight along with the fight scenes. There are a lot of scenes that involve sex and a whole lot of nudity. This is a series some may disregard for its lewdness. If you can get past that, the story is what makes CF a great series. I highly recommend this title if you are a fan of Streamline Pictures. Even if your not, this is a series to keep.
