Normally when I capture images, I do so via an old version of SnagIt combined with Media Player Classic. The combination works quite well. Unfortunately, I've discovered that the MP4 file format defies this, thus I have no way to capture images. I've looked for software, but really haven't found anything. I did find some software to convert MP4 files to AVI, but the result does not contain video, only audio.
So, does anyone know of a software that can do image captures from MP4 files?

I use BSPlayer for those. I couldn't get Media Player Classic or Media Player 10 to do it for me.
If you go to Codecguide.com and download the k-lite codec pack, it includes a program called BSPlayer.
Change the overlay setting to DEFAULT (If it isn't already) and you can take all the print screens you want by pushing the 'P' button.

Zoomplayer as my video player saves screenshots (Alt-F) of the displayed video as BMP files in some configurable directory (look for some option like "setup" / "tools" / "other" for setting the path, my installation is German thus I don't know the exact names in the Engish version). So you can screenshot anything you can view, which covers installed codecs as well as installed DirectShow filters.
The problem with using players for this job is that you have to position to the appropriate frame which is not so easy with most players. When I search for screenshots without visible subtitles I sometimes have to use VirtualDubMod (where I can move in single frame mode); then again I need a real codec as to be able to open the file, as DirectShow filters don't produce a video stream that VirtualDub were able to access.

For the record, I've been shown how to get MPC and SnagIt to work. In the "Options" section of MPC, I had to chage the Playback-->Output options. DirectShow Video got changed from "System Default" to "VMR9 (renderless)." QuickTime Video got changed from System Default to DirectX 9. When I did this, I could use SnagIt to capture MP4 images. I believe it was the later change that did it, since the System Default for QuickTime won't allow the saving of images.
