Synopsis
Section 9 performs an aptitude test for new recruits. But right when the last duo has failed to shadow Kusanagi, her communication line to Batou is suddenly interrupted. Kusanagi finds herself in an empty street with a small antique shop where she faces a precious memory.

[2007-08-21, Devil Doll: 6/10] The first episode to provide more background information about Motoko, one of the most mysterious lead characters in anime - and I did like this charming, completely action-free story. Most notably the effect on the degree of difficulty for the test was plausible as well as good for all characters' development. What's more, we'll need certain information from this episode later on (see episode 16). Then again, the lack of any kind of technical explanation what actually happened, plus that cheesy four-letter word in the end, require severe downgrades. This isn't a fantasy series, folks - you can't do that here, telling us Makoto's "four-layer firewall" has been hacked and stuff... how could she just continue doing her daily business if that were true? And if it were nothing but a reverie then what was up with that communication line to Batou, and why was he unable to physically follow Motoko?
