Busou Renkin - 26: Period

Title:Busou Renkin
Episode:26: Period
Synopsis
Tokiko challenges Papillon to "settle things", with herself substituting for Kazuki; he scoffs at the notion of anyone "replacing" his arch rival Kazuki. A countdown timer announces that Papillon's flask will have completed it's task in 60 seconds; Tokiko is horrified by the thought that he intends to carry out his threat to "burn everything", and has created some sort of alchemic weapon to enable himself to do so. She deals him a nasty wound, only to find that the flask wasn't containing what she expected. Afterwards, the wounded Papillon (and everybody else) notice a strange glint from the surface of the moon. Tokiko is hurriedly summoned to Alchemic Regiment headquarters, where the General announces a new mission: "We will now go and rendezvous with Warrior Mutou Kazuki"...

Stretch:
I intentionally delayed watching this final episode, because in spite of some distinct problems, Busou Renkin struck such a good vibe with me that I simply didn't want it to end (that doesn't happen often). I've tried not to give too much away either through the synopsis, images, or these comments, but here goes. Talk about happy endings! It's not often that an action-comedy leaves me feeling so good at the end. A little corny, but it also makes a good deal of sense; a number of comments and events from past episodes (like Victor's "Fatal Attraction" technique) come back into play here in a well thought-out manner. When Tokiko seriously injured Papillon it gave me a start as I feared this favorite character of mine might die; but he is a homunculus after all, and I should've remembered that he once survived getting a basketball-sized hole blown through his body. When a mission to rescue Kazuki is mounted, the show seems to shift into high gear, and a somewhat far-out (even for this show) twist takes place. But I don't care; this is such a feel-good show at this point that I'm not interested in whether it's truly plausible or not ("plausibility" has never been a high priority during this series). I bet a lot of people will scoff at the outcome of Kazuki's battle with Victor, and later his duel with Papillon, but they work for me. The latter fight, especially, had a cathartic ending compared to that in the final episode of s-CRY-ed and I greatly prefer it (the music was nicely chosen, too). I'm glad things worked out as they did for Papillon. Don't miss the numerous gags among the credits. This final episode of Busou Renkin leaves me with a smile on my face--what more can I say?
