Welcome to the Misaka arc of this series! Another excellent episode, most notably with dozens of little hints in the dialogues (praising them in detail would be too spoilerish) and a great way of interweaving the girls' stories.
The only downside was the cheap method they used for sidelining Mai (at least they noticed that a healer would ruin the scenario), and her repeated reference to knowing (but not telling) something about Ayu. That annoyed me a bit.
Stretch:
This episode started out pretty silly and lighthearted, whereas I'd expected another gripping, dramatic thread to take off rightaway. Before it is over, however, the story takes a sad turn as we learn that Shiori is deathly ill. Judging from the preview of the next episode, Yuuichi will find himself obliged to comfort her and keep her company, much like he did for Makoto. I was surprised to learn that Kanon is based on a dating sim game--I never expected all sorts of weird, supernatural stuff from a game of such a type. Why does Ayu feature in the ED sequence? Will she turn out to be the most important female character? Or is she just fun to look at?

[Comment by Devil Doll: Actually, "dating sim" doesn't describe the Kanon Visual Novel (warning: Only read the first chapter of that article up to the TOC if you want to avoid spoilers) too well (even though having sex with the girl of your choice is the goal in the adult variant of the game, and you can probably guess by now at which point of the story this would have happened in the case of Makoto resp. Mai).

Kanon (2006) is quite close to the original game's story where the audience plays Yuuichi's role (that's why he has to be the "hero" of the story); Kanon (2002) added a bit more focus on the romance and shifted the influence of the side characters, therefore it is less Yuuichi-centric by nature and a bit more surprising about certain developments.]

I was glad to see the writers give Mia and Sayuri another nod before leaving them, but I will admit that their being stuffed in the closet was oh so convenient. I guess we won't see them again until the end.

The clues dropped were a lot of fun as someone who's already seen the original anime. Then there's Shiori's story, which will be resolved next. That will be an enjoyable ride.
