We're somewhere between episode 3 and 4 of the original series (as the events have been slightly rearranged), and I'm beginning to like the slower narration speed of this remake. There's enough interesting little details for the fans of the original show to reward watching the remake in any case.
Giving Nayuki and her club more focus here was a nice idea, and it also improved Kaori's role as Nayuki's best friend in this story. Forming a bond between Ayu and Makoto was interesting as well - we'll see where this will lead to when Makoto's critical time will come. Yuuichi is acting a lot more mature in respect to both Ayu and Makoto this time - he's almost an adult compared to these girls. Some little hints were interesting, such as Ayu falling down so many times, or Yuuichi promising he'd even break a window to get into school. (Remember how Makoto was jumping around in the kitchen in episode 3, even clinging to the fridge, which is also quite telling if you know what will happen later. This time Makoto is really acting like she should, instead of being a mere nuisance - she was my least liked character in the original series.)
I still wonder why they put so much emphasis on running gags (I liked Yuuichis Line Of The Week much better in the original series) - and it's such a shame how this episode didn't make use of the wonderful cliffhanger in the original series' episode 3! That could have been the first highlight of this show...

AstroNerdBoy (29 Oct 2006): To pick up one of DD's thoughts, another hint about Ayu was set in the flashback sequence where he promised her where he'd meet her, sealed with a yubikiri. ^_^

I'm liking the slow pace of the series, but in the back of my mind, I'm wondering how this will affect new viewers who've never played the game or seen the original anime. Having seen it before, I know the good stuff that is in store for us.

I will say that in comparing the two series, the subtle changes here and there to characters have made them a bit more interesting this time around. I like how the taiyuki incidents have been softened. In my opinion, this will be a plus when Ayu's story comes to fruition. And I'll agree with DD's thoughts on Yuuichi's greater maturity this time around as well as Makoto's behaving in a matter that will better fit her story's realization. So all in all, I think the anime writers are doing a great job thus far and we'll see where they go from here.
