Kanon (2006) - 01: Silver Overture

Overture = instrumental introduction to a dramatic, choral or, occasionally, instrumental composition.

Yuuichi arrives at back at a town he's not been to since he was a child. Now in high school, Yuuchi will attend school here, living with his Aunt and his cousin Nayuki, who's two hours late picking him up from the train station. Nayuki is keen on him remembering the greatness of how things were to her when they were kids, but Yuuichi doesn't seem to remember much.

Nayuki shows Yuuichi around the town, where they meet classmates Kaori and Kitagawa-kun. Afterward, Yuuichi and Nayuki go on a shopping trip where he waits outside of the supermarket. While waiting, he is run over by Ayu, a girl who loves taiyaki and who forgot her wallet. By the time he returns, he has left Nayuki waiting for him.

Then, we are treated to a flashback where Nayuki and Yuuichi from seven years before outside the same supermarket went through a similar thing with Nayuki being forced to wait for Yuuichi to return after leaving with a young Ayu.

AstroNerdBoy: You know, it doesn't sound like much based on the synopsis, and maybe it isn't. I remember watching the original Kanon and struggled to get through the first few episodes. This episode took its time, but since I loved the original anime so much, I've had no problem taking a leisurely stroll through the first episode.

The only thing that bothered me was Kaori and Kitagawa-kun. They were paired up in the first anime (sorta), but I don't remember Kitagawa-kun being a loser like that. If anything, he was more in control in the original anime and he had a way of flustering Kaori. Now, Kaori is in complete control. I guess I'll get used to it.
