Synopsis | |
Kei is in agony with an arm chopped off and a leg being dissolved by acid, and begs Kato to finish him off. Sakuraoka objects, and Kato performs some ad hoc first aid instead. He explains to her that Kei's injuries will be healed if he survives the mission. Two of the newcomers, with both suits and guns, decide to take down an alien by themselves. "It's too easy" they comment as they creep up behind a seemingly oblivious alien--it turns out they are right. Kato retrieves his weapon of choice from the temple, but is attacked by another alien. Sakuraoka is comforting Kei when the gilded, multi-armed alien appears. Kei urges her to run and save herself, but she declares she will defend him, being the expert kickboxer that she is... | |

Ugh... This episode left me with a sickening feeling in my stomach, perhaps because of a seeming utter disregard for the conventional rules of storytelling. The body count jumps radically as characters which I was rooting for are mowed down wholesale; their deaths seem meaningless and pointless (and, I suppose it could be argued, are therefore a realistic depiction of life-and-death combat). Though I often don't like the way characters get snuffed, it did have the effect of leaving me uncertain of what would happen to anybody besides Kei himself. I got a feeling of callous absurdity from the way the makers didn't even seem to be trying to make the violence realistic, but instead were pouring on the blood gratuitously. At the end, it's hard to believe there are really still five episodes to go! P.S: Did you notice how the alien which the newcomers tackled took two hits to the head from their blasters, and one to the body--yet all three times it was it's head which regenerated? Somebody got careless (or lazy)! [Devil Doll, 2007-02-24] I'm sick and tired of the many continuity errors of this series, and of the stupidity of the characters (most notably of the character who won the last fight this time). And how can a character continue a boxing fight after one of his arms has been cut off? This time the butchering went to the extreme but at least some of the casualties left the audience with a feeling they were actually called for, and certain character developments (such as stalker girl) weren't bad either. |
