Gantz - 13: Please Die

Title:Gantz
Episode:13: Please Die
Synopsis
Kei fears his situation is hopeless as he faces the terrifying "boss" alien and is surrounded by the usual Suzuki aliens. Since Kato will not shoot to kill, Kishimoto leads Hojo into the garage where Kayo and Ryota have been battered by the aliens. They blaze away, but their blasters don't have any effect--not immediately, that is. The boss alien seems to be ignoring Kei, and he manages to make the other aliens smile by saying that yes, he is "Yuzo-kun". But, as luck would have it, an accident involving one of the chicks puts them in a bad mood once again. After resolving that he will not die after all, Kei pulls his hidden blaster and fires wildly...

So much for the second alien hunt; not as good, I'd say, as the first one. For one thing, the boss alien wasn't all that deadly after all. The scene in which Gantz reveals the players' scores was funny, at least the dog's assessment (the stalker girl's name is Sadako). What's frustrating is that we didn't really learn anything about Gantz and the purpose behind these alien hunts, except that scoring 100 points will presumably allow you to go free (and that could have been guessed from Nishi's assessment after the last hunt). And why do the characters just say "see ya later" and go home afterwards? Doesn't the idea occur to anyone to discuss what the f--k just happened? Or to try to figure out how to escape from being controlled by Gantz? Or to devise the best possible tactics for the next mission (their lives might well depend on planning ahead, you know)? I was sure Kayo and Ryota would survive--wouldn't it have been hilarious if a grandmother and a child had turned out to be better alien hunters than the veterans or the biker punks? But no, they were never more than an annoyance. Nishi was a neat character, but he got killed off; Kayo and Ryota could have been neat characters, but now they're dead--this show is missing a lot of opportunities! Here's an idea: since Gantz can apparently revive dead people at will, have it revive Nishi yet again, which will surprise the others when they return for the next hunt. Of course he'll have to start from zero points again...

I'm oddly amazed by this episode. Despite all what Stretch mentioned above - a number of characters have suddenly begun to develop a bit of a brain (like exchanging information, forming a group, trusting each other and so on) and thus became a lot more interesting to me (I guess Hojo is the one character who makes me hope for some positive development). They're no longer worms, they're at least mammals now - not yet intelligent humans but at least there's some progress. 11 wasted episodes until now but the second hunt resulted in some people at least taking the situation for real (while making stupid mistakes in planning, I concede that). While I sure would like to know more about Gantz as well, for the time being I'm fine with watching these characters interact and develop primitive strategies (based on whatever information they have).
I also have the impression that the violence level is lower now - yes, there's all the alien slaughtering but at least this serves a purpose (and be that just to please Gantz and "score points"), contrary to all the "real-life" violence we've been exposed to in the early episodes. The Alien Hunts give us the impression of a Video Game, so the surreal scenario allows the audience to take all the violence a lot more lightly: Perhaps it's all just not real?
