Kaede's Story

Rin's been hanging out more and more with Asa-senpai and Kaede is beginning to notice. He no longer eats with them, shops with them, or even comes home very often. Kaede is looking out of sorts and remembers her past with Rin.

  1. Kaede - When she was small, Rin came over to stay with her and her dad and the other 3 parents went off on a vacation. During this time, they had an accident coming home that killed all 3 of them. Kaede went into a coma because of this and Rin pulled her out of it by telling her that they came home early because he asked them to. This brings Kaede out of her funk but instead instills her with a vengeance bordering on homicidal. She tortured little Rin (slashing curtains, dropping knives on his head, ignoring him in school) from Elementary to Jr High. At the end, she destroys his model ship and discovers under Rin's bed a postcard from her mom, basically informing her that her mom came home early because Kaede was sick. In other words, it's her fault. She tries to commit suicide. Rin saves her. Flashback to future She is cooking some stew for Rin that she knows he isn't going to eat. She has the Diclonius eyes from the past. She goes out to answer the door and Primula looks in the pot. Kaede has been stiring an empty pot for the last 10 minutes. Rin and Asa are at the door, Kaede finally loses it and tells Asa to die. Asa promptly falls on the floor and has a seizure.
  2. Primula - After seeing the empty pot, she goes into Rin's room. There on the desk is a bunch of pictures of Rin and Asa, except someone has taken a marker and scratched Asa out. (See Kaede above)
  3. Rin - He knows their parents death are Kaede's fault but he can't stand seeing her sad. So instead he takes her little Elfen Lied diclonius mode and subsequent torture for many years. After she realizes the truth, he's been living off her generosity all these years. So he likes hanging out with Asa, a girl who may or may not die but just lives life day after day.
  4. Asa - Is enjoying her dates with Rin enormously. She has attacks all day (including one at the restaurant) but she can handle it. But the last one from Kaede did it and she is out.

Oh my,
This is getting serious. Nothing funny about this episode at all. We don't even really get to see Sia and Nerine at all. It's a Asa / Kaede showdown. And Kaede has just gone bonkers.

This series has had an intro-flash giving this series a PG15+ rating, and up until episode 19 & 20, I have been at a loss as to why. Episode 19 becomes uncomfortable and unsettled, and then episode 20 is disturbingly dark with Kaeda displaying troubling and possessive behavior towards ‘her Rin’. And episode 20 ends with a startling single-sentence that almost promises that many changes are to come…

This episode alone is worth watching the whole series. This is the series that School Days (TV) tried to be and failed miserably.
