Koikoi 7 - 8: The Goddess Awakens!? The Asuka Yayois of Light and Dark

Title:Koikoi 7
Episode:8: The Goddess Awakens!? The Asuka Yayois of Light and Dark
Synopsis
The Three Lights Festival is underway, but Tetsuro is uncomfortable, since he cannot bring himself to tell Asuka that the Celonius 28 stole a kiss from him--his first kiss--and claimed to have exactly the same name as she has. He may have thought his days of crossdressing were done, but that doesn't turn out to be so. Kanemi-sensei attempts to activate the school's defense system in case #28 tries something--either at the bidding of the Syndicate, or of her own free will--but finds her access to the program has somehow been denied. #28 finds "Tetsuko" working in a cafe and whisks him away. She knows his real identity, and when he mentions that he knows another girl with the same name, she makes the cryptic remark that "I am Asuka Yayoi's shadow; a shadow that never touched the light". The real Asuka comes along. "If I destroy the light I'll cease to be shadow" #28 reasons. A strange man in a white lab jacket is on the school grounds. Kanemi-sensei rounds up the remaining members of the Koikoi 7 and warns them of the Celonius 28. "She originally existed as a network system intended to monitor Tetsuro and Yayoi" Kanemi explains, and was intended to protect the two as children. Meanwhile, #28 tells the same story to Asuka, but says "I only want to protect him now!". She doesn't know why she feels this way, since Asuka's feelings were installed into her. #28 attacks Asuka and knocks her unconscious. "Tetsuro, I just want to be with you" she says. "There is no need for two Asuka Yayois"...

*Now* it's all starting to come together! There was quite possibly more plot development in this one episode than in all the previous ones combined. We learn a lot about #28's origins, but a number of new questions are raised: Why were Tetsuro (and Asuka, as a child) so important that they needed such a high-tech system to monitor and protect them? Was Asuka already a cyborg back then, or did something happen to her since? How did any of the Koikoi 7 become cyborgs? What is "The Syndicate" and what does it intend to do? I was kind of surprised how quickly the crisis involving #28 passed, given the trouble the show went to to explain her. Maybe now there really will be seven members of the Koikoi 7!
