The protagonist, Baki Hanma, trains with an intense focus to become strong enough to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, the strongest fighter in the world. Five of the world's most violent and brutal death row inmates are gathering to face Baki. Their objective is to taste defeat -- their unmatched strength and skill have led them to grow bored of life itself, and they now seek out Baki in the hopes that he can overwhelm and utterly crush them. In this crisis, other underground martial art warriors gather to fight by Baki's side: Kaoru Hanayama, Gouki Shibukawa, Retsu Kaioh, and Doppo Orochi.

I will admit I'm somewhat familiar with the long-running Baki the Grappler franchise as I seen episodes of the 2000s TV anime adaptation of it and this ONA series serves to continue adapting its manga source material exploring Baki and several martial artists having a sort of competition brawling against several escaped prisoners of superhuman level. The whole setup for this is a little contrived with the five escaped prisoners having the common goal of wanting to "taste defeat," but the series loves dabbling into old school shounen action anime cliches with its ridiculously muscular characters and over-the-top violent techniques and abilities introduced by its characters that gives the series its charm. Plus, I kind of get the premise might have just been a thin excuse to feature this competition and show off how the fights play out. The series does enough to flesh out its characters and explore their backgrounds, at least being mindful of the 17 year gap between the 2001 TV anime and the ONA. It also offers up some solid development of Baki's relationship with girlfriend Kozue, as he ponders at points about what direction he wants to go despite his devotion to martial arts. Only gripe I have with this is that the series does end inconclusively as its final few episodes serve to set up events for its next story arc that would eventually be adapted into a second ONA series. While not necessarily breaking any new ground as far as shounen action titles go, Baki still has its charm that fans of old school action anime may love to sink their teeth into with its exaggerated characters and violent martial arts action.
