(One episode watched):

Episode one begins with a scene of numerous fires burning in Tokyo. The city hasn't been levelled, but considerable damage has clearly occured. An earthquake? The cause isn't clear. This, it seems, is a preview of the climax to come. We meet Toake Daigo, a selfless member of the 'Special Rescue Corps', an elite unit of the Tokyo Fire Department. We also meet his partner, Onoda Shun, who is a more by-the-book sort of fireman. We flash back to the draconian training they underwent, along with another comrade, Nakamura Yuki (a woman), to earn a place in the SRC. Getting an idea of what it's like in the TFD, and what sort of techniques and equipment they use, was interesting. It seems to have a military-like discipline. This story seems to have started out as a popular manga, then been made into a movie and now an anime. On the one hand, the personalities of these three central characters didn't reach out and grab me, but on the other some effort seems to be underway to develop them, so maybe they still will. It's hard to tell them apart when they are wearing their protective suits and helmets, and only their faces are visible! At the end of the first episode I remained undecided as to whether I would watch this show. It will probably depend on whether the characters do indeed develop and whether the work they do (and their lives off duty) are exciting and interesting.
