Ten years ago the hero 'Max' narrowly defeated the Demon Lord, who vowed he would be revived someday and inflict 'blood soaked vengeance' upon Max and his team. Today the Demon Lord is back, but his resurrection was a little premature and he (she?) doen't look quite as fearsome as before. Time has not been kind to Max either, and Demon Lord is appalled at the situation he has fallen into--so appalled that he/she cannot help but feel sorry for him.

(Two episodes watched):

Episode one seemed to get off to a slow start with the tired old stereotypes of a Demon last boss up against a hero and his team of adventurers. There is a good deal of fanservice with close-ups of the crotch and ass of Zenia, the Lord's secretary. But things picked up once the bizarre premise was revealed. Max has fallen from grace big time, with allegations of having affairs with married women and being a brawler. He hasn't seen his former comrades in years, and is disillusioned and apathetic about the rebirth of his old foe. I wasn't sure I liked Demon Lord's (DL's) superdeformed new physique; I think it makes it hard to take DL seriously. Has the isekai world been transformed in a decade into something virtually identical to modern Japan? I guess, since there is no mention that DL and Max have somehow been transported to Earth. But there are amusing lines, like "Don't just throw the Holy Blade aside like it's yesterday's trash!". It looks like Max and DL will be frenemies of a sort, and two other heroes will come along at some point. I wonder where this can possibly go, so I am eager for episode two.

There's always the risk with shows that have a 'joke premise'--a bizarre basic situation that demands an explanation. The risk is that maybe that big joke is about all there is to the anime and otherwise it will be an unremarkable show and no worthwhile explanation will ever be provided. I got the unpleasant feeling in episode two that this might be a show of that sort. We get more Zenia fanservice (she gets drunk and runs around naked); I would wager that the only reason she was included in the cast was to show off her T&A. But the big problem was that this episode wasn't as funny as the first one and I was left with little idea where the plot was going. If the jokes aren't going to be enough to carry the show forward on their own, there must be some sort of interesting plot, but I wasn't seeing any signs of that. It looks like a member of Max's team from ten years ago is about to make contact with him again, but why wasn't that done in episode two instead of three? Largely wasting an episode doesn't leave me with much confidence in this show, and perhaps I will drop it.
