I first learned of the term anime from the same place I learned of British Comedies -- Japan. I was stationed at Yokota AB from 1989 to 1991 and my best friend and roommate was big into anime. At the time, I couldn't see the point in anime, especially if you couldn't understand it! Far be it from me to try to learn Japanese though. My priorities lay elsewhere in those days. However, I did see several RAW anime titles. Ranma 1/2 had just started when I came to Japan. Dirty Pair had seen its TV run and OAV run complete so that the OAV's were now on TV. And in the movie category, I saw Castle of Cagliostro, which despite not knowing what was being said, I found myself very intrigued by it as well as Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. If I'm not mistaken, there were VHS copies of both titles in English and I purchased both (if not there, then when I returned to the US).
I didn't get into anime until 2002 when on a whim, I went to Amazon to see if my old friend and roommate from Japan was right in his prediction of anime eventually being big in the US. He was! Anime was big. Since then, I've downloaded, rented, and then purchased a ton of anime. I find that I have gravitated to the romantic-comedy genre of anime for my favorite type of anime. Here are my current top-10 anime titles and top-10 anime music songs:
