Mimu Emilton is a cute fourteen-year-old who has come to the annual Starland Festival to become an idol, just like her role model, Yuri. It is the most celebrated event on a united Earth, and Yuri, now the President of Earth, has encouraged people to join the ranks of Excellent Idols. Unfortunately for Mimu, she can never seem to make it to her audition on time, as misadventure after misadventure lands her in situations (usually involving undergarment exposure, I might add) that she escapes with the help of the current Excellent Idols, whom she befriends. Just as she makes her place on the stage and begins her audition, though, an unknown group of aliens kidnaps her and the Excellent Idols. It is only the beginning of a wild interdimensional goose-chase that places Mimu in the position to save the world, if only she can believe in herself. (summary from animenfo.com)

Unevaluated Stretch [series:82#628]
(One episode watched):

I thought I was lucky to find DVDs at 88% off the usual price, but now I know better; on the contrary, somebody was lucky to make back 12% of the original price. Idol Project had a ridiculous premise yet jokes that are so mediocre that I hardly cracked a smile. I was tempted to watch in dubbed mode, even though I usually prefer subtitles, just to get the episode over more quickly. The single word that this show most brings to mind is "vapid".

Watch 6 5 6 7 3 5 Bryan [series:82#14]
If there were such a rating, I probably should give Idol Project a run in the other room and hide under the bed until its over rating. However, a couple of the songs were catchy and there were a few moments spread over the 4 OAVs which were funny. And heck, Idol Project is liberally sprinkled with pseudo fan-service. Not much of a defense really.
IP is definitely different. The first OAV consists of our not-yet-an-idol protagonist Mimu Emilton, arriving late for her audition at some kind of giant theme park for idols. Each of the seven primary idols in the series is briefly introduced. Each of them lives in a tiny, stereotypical universe. These include the ninja idol, the rock and roll idol, the tiny cutesy idol, and my favorite, the sort of Devil Hunter Yohko rip-off idol who goes around shouting Tomodach! Tomadachi! all the time. This day there is an audition for new idols, but before it begins they are kidnapped by three shape-changing creatures, which look something like rejected character designs from Digimon.
Now our seven idols and 1 wannabe find themselves at a giant intergalactic idol contest. The interplanetary idols compete for the honor blowing a horn which makes a new sun come out of a giant clam shell. (...?...). Again there were one or two funny moments, a couple J-culture jokes I didnt get and lots and lots well proportioned gals in bikinis wrestling in mud and water-skiing. Well, heck, who can completely dislike that.
In ep three, my -uhm- favorite, Mimu is now making ends meet on the movie planet (I think) where everything is some kind of pop-cultural/anime parody. Most of the events center around the tomodachi!! idols battle with a bunch of fruity looking mechas. There were numerous in-jokes in this ranging from Five Star Stories, to Gunbuster to Eva. I give them credit for trying and the rocket punch! was a hoot. Cel counts were not bad, and while events transpire fast and furious, the action was kind of choppy in places. Again, in a very strange way, it was quite imaginative sort of a cross between Dr. Seuss and what you might get if you monitor a drunk otakus dreams.
Episode 4 wraps things up as Mimu finally gets to sing. She has too in order to plug a breach in space/time caused by the excessive adoration of the fan community for one particular idol. I kid you not. All told, nothing that I will watch again soon, but in a room full of guys who really know there anime, this would play well.

Watch 6 5 5 8 Dingle [series:82#35]
The story is not all that good, but it does have it's funny parts. I like the music which is kind of good since the show is about pop idols. There is A LOT OF T&A. I saw it for free so I can not complain. It is a good no brainer watch.
