This series reminded me in ways of Slayers, though way more on the comedic side and Gokudo having a bit more of a villainous slant than Lina. Besides medieval fantasy, Gokudo takes the opportunity to poke fun of elements of Eastern myth like characters from Journey to the West and the Hindu god of heaven, Indra. The humor here was hit-or-miss as I had moments that I laughed at some of the ridiculous twists that befell Gokudo and his crew, but others where I felt rather indifferent. The show's more a treat for comedy anime fans as Gokudo lacks the bits of serious adventure that Slayers tossed in at points when Lina and her allies clashed with powerful enemy threats that threatened humanity. It's still a decent quick romp to check out, but it's nowhere on the caliber of Slayers when it comes to parodying elements of medieval fantasy.

Here's another one I watched a while back but failed to comment on. I rewatched it so I can give a proper review.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
The artwork reminded me a lot of Slayers. It had the same look and feel but slightly better.... ever so slightly. Animation was sorta choppy with quick frame rates. It really didn't take away from the series however. Character designs were similar.

Music
The OP was a rock piece that was suprisingly good. For a change, it had male vocals. The ED was stupid funny! The song itself was pretty decent with male vocals (which is pretty rare). It was an alternative piece.

Series and Episode Story
This was a hilarious series filled with wacky moments and antics. I was busting a gut over the amazingly funny facial expressions and situations. This is one anti-hero that finds himself in one crazy predicament after another. Forbid (below) said it best.... "the Anti-Hero who keeps doing heroic things while doing evil things". Gokudo must be one of the best pseudo-heroes in any anime. I love him!! Hahaha! There is some semblance of a plot, however, because of the nature of this anime, you can't take anything serious and it'll be hard to.

Overall, this was one hilarious and fun series. If you loved Slayers and similar, you'll probably love this as well. Every episode is worth watching, even if it's only for the laughs and nothing more.

Ok Lets see, what happens when you take Lina Inverse from The Slayers and Dark Schnieder from Bastard and cross them together? You get Gokudo, the Anti-Hero who keeps doing heroic things while doing evil things. He's a evil dude who just cares about himself. He's going a magic sword and a magic genie and a girl who's head over heels in love (And is just like Lina in personality) and is a prince to boot.

Edit : All Episodes watched. Very funny! Very good! My only real problem, this whole thing is a series (with a few fillers) but there is this gap of missing info between each arc. They fill it with a little intro at each episode, but I KNOW they didn't explain that in the previous episode. Gokudo does something, needs something fixed, and poof they are on the quest to the mysterious island to fix it. But how did they get there, they were just talking about something else in the last episode. It's a good rent though, and defintely looks like something the writer of slayers did in his spare time.

It's good but The Slayers was better hence the Rent Rating

Gokudo is one very (chuckle) strange and (giggle) humorous series. It might be easy to compare this series to Slayers, but I think that it should better be compared to the humor of the series Sorcerer Hunters. The story is at the same silly and wild level, but the main character is really something else. Gokudo is about as lecherous, self-obsessed and self-serving as Dark Snyder (from Bastard,) but he would only measure up to Dark’s kneecap in terms of ability, not that Gokudo is smart enough to notice or be bothered enough to want to stop from pulling the stupid pranks and antics that he does.

If you enjoy anime with low-brow humor and cheesy dialogue, then you will enjoy this series. With an egomaniacal and traitorous main character, Gokudo is accompanied by a princess, more into adventure than palace-pomp and a transgender genie, in a land filed with magic, monsters, romance and treachery. Gokudo's adventures start when he is caught up in a marital dispute between a granny-goddess and her daemon husband, the 'Magic King' who is trying to take over the world of the humans. It appears that the evil king of the kingdom, who has made a dark pact with the daemons, has put his only son to death to avoid the prophecy that foretold his downfall. A resurrection spell went very wrong, and two princes were born from the dead heir’s spirit. While Gokudo’s brother got all of the great looks, dashing womanizing charm and high princely ambitions, Gokudo got stuck with what was left over (and it was not much). And even when Gokudo does manage to get what he wants, (girls and wealth,) he finds the restraints of being a prince to wealthy kingdom to be just too much and he runs away, only to be set up again by the granny-goddess on another of her strange quests.

This series is very silly and absurd, and should not be taken with any measure of seriousness, but I think that is why I enjoyed it so much. I still chuckle at the scene where Gokudo counters a sleep-gas by cutting the cheese in a most rancorous and toxic manner. One of his traveling companions, an obese male Djinn transforms into a voluptuous dancing girl, but since he a serious lush, he still messes up continiously and somehow manages to transform Gokudo into a girl. Arsaya, the princess travelling with Gokudo is probably too good for him, but she somehow puts up with all of his antics. Later on, Gokudo manages to pick up a small crowd of even stranger companions, but it works well to keep the story roaring along. And so Gokudo’s travels go, down a dark road filled with bad puns, cheap sex jokes, tawdry ambitions and strange creatures, but always with a lot of light hearted and entertaining fun.

ALMOST as good as Slayers. And for a huge Slayers fan thats really saying something. Gokudo is that great lead character that you hate and route for all at the same time. This guy is someone we can all relate too. He really is out for number 1 but somehow always ends up doing the right thing (ok most of the time) And Rubet sp? is a great counter balance in a classic ying and yang relationship Gin and the Majic prine Niari are addions along the lines of Slayer charter interaction. A definate Buy that you won't regret if you want a good laugh.

Well, what can I say just that this series is pretty damn good if you ask me... Well No one really did but you know. The series animation is consistant and in that way I mean good. There is some inuendo in the show which I find to be funny. Gokudo is out for himself and that's what I like about him. I mean usually I find in most anime the main character cares about people and might even put there life out there for them. But not my man Gokudo.... All in all I do recommend the series who wants to laugh a little. Also for who ever wants to see the other type of hero. I give this series 3 and a half stars (My star scale goes only up to 4 though)!
