'In the beginning, the sky turned odd. And then, so many of those machines that erase people showed up. And then there was almost no one left in this world'. Renge Kasumi, lonely and stricken with amnesia, has wandered about, fearing that she might be the last person in the world. But then she stumbled across a group of five girls who resist the devices whose directive is to destroy all of humankind. Each can summon a fantastic weapon when she needs it, and it turns out that Renge can too.

(One episode watched):

Early on, I wondered if this was all happening in a videogame or if it really was a post-apocalypse situation. The girls refer to their battle as a 'game' and have a curiously cheerful attitude considering they may be the last humans left in the world. Small robots keep the water and electricity coming, so they have little to worry about besides fighting the devices and finding new ways to make preserved foods taste good. Indeed, this seemed to become a cooking show at one point. Each girl has a little quirk but not really a personality, which might partially explain why this show never really drew my attention. How did these six girls acquire fantastical weapons (with fantastical names, like 'Gleipnir') that allow them to slaughter the devices? There is a mention of a 'weapon drop', which is again a videogame term. There are two supposedly shocking revelations--that Renge has amnesia, and that the girls apparently have some sort of policy that while they fight side by side and banter about endlessly, they won't become true friends, because if they did that it would be too painful if one of them 'vanished'. But they are clearly friends for all intents and purposes, and Renge having amnesia hardly seemed to matter to me since we never get to know her well. Just an excuse that she won't have to explain where she got her freaky weapon from, it seems. I don't think the devices ever even got a name, much less any explanation of where they came from--even if that explanation is just a theory on the part of the girls. The girls never wonder what became of everyone who vanished--are they dead, or were they transfered somewhere else, or what? Perhaps the girls being so carefree left me with a feeling that very little was at stake and therefore watching this show would be like watching somebody else play a videogame. I felt little or no curiousity about how this situation had come about or whether the girls would manage to avoid vanishing. This show seems to have been made by converting a videogame to anime and making as little effort as possible to flesh the story and characters out. The jokes were not worth laughing at and in general this show never stimulated any serious interest within me.
