Miku 'Purin' Suride is dismayed when, while she has earned admittance to the cutting edge Yuyu Girls Vocational High School ('YuVoc'), her lackadaisical and careless friend Serufu Yua is content to enroll at the modest Gata Gata High School. At Gata Gata Serufu takes a somewhat more laid-back approach to technology via the Do It Yourself club.

(Four episodes watched):

Episode one was nearly over before I had any idea what the premise of this show might be. This seems to be happening in either the present or the not-too-distant future in which drones routinely fly overhead. Purin has fully embraced high tech like computers and 3D printing, and even boasts of having designed an artificial body part that could be surgically implanted into a patient. Serufu (Japanese for 'self', apparently) in contrast is amazed by such simple devices as a hand-held battery powered drill. She discovers the DIY club while thanking stranger Rei Yasaku for a favor. The idea seems to be that even in this day and age people can be proud of work they do themselves with modest tools rather than rely on high tech designed and operated by someone else. As usual, the DIY club is languishing for lack of members, and Serufu agrees to join. I was not exactly charmed by the characters or intrigued by the premise, but I suppose I will watch episode two as well. This might be more about teaching the viewer the basics of handling tools than telling a story, but that is not yet clear.

In episode two another member is recruited, this one a girl who is usually reading alone and has had no real friends up 'til now. This show feels kind of slow moving and I wish we would get to the meat of the dispute between Serufu and Purin before we add even more characters. In episode three an American girl, a child genius who has nevertheless made one big mistake, appears. And it seems clear from the OP sequence that sooner or later Purin will be at least an unofficial member of the DIY Club as well. But no matter how you slice it, this show is not very funny--how many times will we see Serufu's pet pig horrified by her family eating pork? The worst thing that can happen is the club being disbanded, but it is a pretty laid-back organization that only performs modest tasks which the members could probably continue on their own if they had to. It's nothing like the situation where the school itself might have to shut down if it isn't saved by a club, like in Love Live. While this show has some heart, it is kind of tedious to watch. Maybe I will compromise and quit watching for now but save all episodes in case I ever want to finish.
