Reika Minamiya hopes to be accepted as an 'Ancient Girl', a mecha pilot in an elite unit that fights the Nergal aliens which threaten earth at the end of the 21st century. She has a secret secondary goal as well: to find out what happened to her missing sister, who was also an Ancient Girl.

(Two episodes watched):

I soon noticed that while this show had been produced by the Chinese firm of Bilibili, the characters had a distinctly Japanese look to them. A little research revealed that this is a combined Japanese-Chinese production, which explained a lot. I must have been watching the version with Chinese voices, because the characters had Chinese names and definitely weren't speaking Japanese. Chinese really flows rapidly! You barely have time to decide whether you will need to pause in order to read a subtitle before another one replaces it. But the translation of those English subtitles left something to be desired. I became confused regarding exactly what was going on, though the basic outline could be discerned. It all seemed pretty typical: an international organization, the 'Guardian League', is overseeing the war against the jellyfish-like Nergal, for some reason only girls can pilot these mecha, and the main character has some sort of gift which causes her to be accepted by a major mecha as its pilot even though she has officially been rejected. One interesting point was the mention that this is all taking place in an 'age of unlimited energy' (just our luck that once we solve our energy problem a race of deadly aliens comes looking for us). With this show seeming as generic as it does, and the difficultly I had making sense of episode one, I was reluctant to commit to it. I watched another episode, and this time didn't have any trouble understanding what was going on. This isn't a terrible show; though we get few major surprises it seems to employ tried and true elements of mecha anime. But the characters seem shallow and I do not have the time for second-rate shows like this.
