Memempu is a child prodigy who, at age 9, has already graduated from college and earns her own living as a mecha miner with her father, Gajumber. They work in the labyrinth, a largely unexplored underground world which is notorious for earthquakes, cave-ins, kaiju (monsters), and even terrorist attacks. Memempu wants to become a 'Marker', a person who explores the still unknown regions of the labyrinth, and in particular to find a spot she once envisaged in a dream. But with the labyrinth being as dangerous as it is, Gajumber is reluctant to let her set out searching.

(One episode watched):

I guess the decision each of us makes regarding whether a new anime is good or not must initially take place on a subconscious level, because I don't recall ever carefully weighing the evidence, concentrating, and then making a conscious choice. It's more of a feeling--I like this/I don't like this--which hasn't yet been expressed in words (that's where writing reviews comes in). And the message I was getting about Sakugan was that my subconscious mind did not want to watch this. Perhaps it didn't seem original enough; it felt familiar--a dangerous but manly job which a certain girl wants to break into, amid life in a dark and dreary post-apocalyptic underground slum. Maybe there were too many coincidences falling into place in her favor: a package, supposedly from a famous Marker, Urorop, arrives out of nowhere to confirm that the place in her dream really does exist, then a tragedy shakes her father into giving his blessing, and it turns out he has just the piece of equipment she needs. Maybe the problem was that Memempu didn't seem all that interesting: she's an unlikely genius with ambitious dreams, but other than that, who is she? Gajumber seemed quite right to me that at present she's too young to be a Marker. And maybe the whole premise just didn't make a whole lot of sense. Why are there dinosaur-like Kaiju running around in these caves without anything to prey on? Whatever the case may be, I was left without any curiosity regarding whether this place really exists and whether Memempu will ever reach it. Maybe the subconscious mind passes a verdict on protagonists, and decides whether they seem realistic and sympathetic or not.

I watched episode two just to be sure that I hadn't misjudged this show, which I sometimes do. Memempu and Gajumber jump into the hot mecha that has been kept in the garage and use it to lead two kaijuu that have been on a rampage away from the city. The chase takes up almost the entire episode. I had sort of assumed that Gajumber would be left behind while Memempu goes on her quest, but it looks like they will actually cooperate. Nevertheless, I was not thrilled and I badly need to cut back the number of new shows I intend to watch, seeing as we are already 1/3 of the way through the season.
