A black onyx meteorite once fell to earth, bringing with it hostile aliens known as the 'D2'. This sent everything into chaos and destruction, until, at the last moment, humanity's saviors appeared. These were the Musicarts, girls who fight using music (which is the only weakness of the D2). A Musicart needs a 'Conductor' to control her. In 2047 conductor Takt Asahina, his Musicart, Cosette, and Cosette's sister(?), Anna, seek to cross North America and reach New York City.

As I search for something to say about this strange show, what comes to mind is that the strange scenario makes it difficult to understand just what's going on and therefore difficult to comment on it. Apparently, music has disappeared from the lives of ordinary people since the D2 arrived; episode one did not make clear just what had happened, but other sources say that the D2 themselves forbade anyone from producing music, because they hate it and are harmed by it. This story seems to be taking place in the southwest US, though whether or not the nation still exists was not revealed. It was odd that a diner alongside a road in the desert is still open for business even though the D2 have apparently taken control of the nearest town and driven everyone out. I noticed that despite the role of music, in the end it was swords and guns and explosions which decided things, as usual. Takt and Rosette winning their fight was described as a 'miracle', but it had actually seemed kind of one-sided in their favor to me. At the end of the episode I still had little idea just what was going on--what the D2 are, why music bugs them, how Musicarts and Conductors cooperate, etc. At least the characters seemed largely likable and I think I will keep watching for now in hopes of things making more sense later on.

In episode two we see that after his famous father's violent death Takt used to basically be a NEET who wanted to do nothing but play the piano alone in the garage where he was staying with Cosette and Anna. Other than his tendency to stay at home, he doesn't seem to have been all that messed-up, though. He was persuaded to make a public performance, and as luck would have it the D2 chose that day to launch an attack. The result was Rosette being transformed from an ordinary girl to a Musicart and him becoming her Conductor. Why this makes sense has yet to be revealed, and likewise who the D2 are, why they hate music, etc. I was feeling impatient for some sort of explanation, as there have been many shows with weird opponents and weird weapons systems that counter them, but which in general were hard to take seriously (the show that I was most reminded of was Listeners). We have gotten to know the main characters and their backstories, but if the basic premise makes no sense it could all easily come crashing down.

In episode three we learn some more about just what happened when Cosette became a Musicart, but by no means everything necessary to fully understand what's going on and take it seriously. Apparently Cosette's mind has been replaced in her body by a new one, the robot-like entity that calls itself 'Destiny'. Does Cosette's mind still exist somewhere, and can it be recovered? Maybe. But I remained frustrated by the shortage of plausibility in this show. How did the D2, apparently unthinking monsters who just want to smash things, emerge from a 'meteor'? Why does Takt's right arm seemingly vanish (temporarily) when Destiny activates? Are Musicarts and Conductors something that someone once designed and invented, or did they just appear inexplicably? This premise has a lot of holes in it and as a result has a hard time holding water.
