Suzune Miyama was once bedridden in a hospital, but she fought her way back to health and has followed her dream of becoming an idol. She has made it all the way to being one of the last four candidates from her region for the 7th Selection Project competition. Japan has been divided into nine regions and the winners from each will face off to see who wins this fantastic opportunity to be catapulted to fame and fortune. Winners are determined by viewers casting votes called 'Yells' for their favorite performer.

(Three episodes watched):

I was getting impatient for an unusual twist when episode one was two-thirds complete yet nothing particularly odd had happened. Finally, something unexpected happens--but it makes little sense to me. Apparently, unless time-travel or some other bizarre game-changer occurs, protagonist Suzune has already been eliminated. Was she really the main character or will each episode be about a different candidate? But that wouldn't allow much time for character development. Maybe this show will be like that martial arts series (I forget it's name and can't find it in the library) where we get to know a new character each week but then they are gone. But that show got much deeper into each character than this one seems to be doing. Actually, a show about one of the countless losers in competitions might be truly novel and intriguing--but we all know what the odds of that ever happening are. Or will Suzune try again next year? I guess only episode two will reveal what's really going on here. As it is, this is seeming like the sort of show that was meant for those who are fascinated by the culture of idols itself, and eat up whatever about it they can get whether interesting characters are involved or not.

Episode two clarifies things: Suzune hasn't been eliminated after all, and the contest will go on. She and her friend Siera are likable characters, but I wonder if the other eight finalists will grow. Deciding the winner by who gets the most 'yells' seems more like a popularity contest than a professional estimation of who is really the best. As luck would have it for Selection Project, I just finished watching Love Live! Superstar!! S1 recently, and can't help noticing that this idol series doesn't entertain me nearly as well as that one did. It isn't terrible--I like Suzune--but it seems to be a good deal more about winning the contest and less about the characters in general (will I be able to keep track of nine of them?).
