Misumi Makoto is 'extremely unlucky when it comes to isekai'. One day he finds himself in the presence of Tsukuyomi, 'one of the three noble children from Japanese mythology'. Out of the blue, Tsukuyomi informs Makoto that his parents are actually from another world and that they made a deal with a Goddess to someday give her the one thing they held most precious--him. Makoto reluctantly agrees to go to this alternate world, and is warned that this particular Goddess 'has a lot of problems'. Sure enough, he finds her to be obnoxious and uncaring as she declares him to be too ugly for her tastes and banishes him to a remote region with nothing but the ability to understand strange languages. But things could be worse, as Makoto finds that he has considerable strength and magic abilities which were largely cancelled out by the conditions on earth. Tsukuyomi grants him permission to do as he pleases in this wasteland, with the warning that he's definitely not immortal.

(Five episodes watched):

I found episode one of this show (my third isekai series of the season--I think there were five in the end) to be modestly amusing as it sort of makes fun of isekai anime in general. Every isekai series that pretends to include humor has a twist nowadays--the girl who's overly defensive, the guy who's extremely methodical and cautious, the girl who is reincarnated as a spider, etc--and here the twist seems to be the bad luck of the protagonist. The plot makes enough sense that I can suspend disbelief and take it seriously. It seems that Makoto will become affiliated with a group of girls--at first I guessed that due to his bad luck he would be little more than their servant, but given the strength he has discovered maybe it will be a harem. I quickly guessed that, based on the tone of it's voice, the dragon he encounters would transform into yet another girl, and so it was. So, not amazing (I had yet to see any new shows that really thrilled me this season), but not too bad, and I decided to continue watching for the time being.

The 'unluckiness' thread seems to have been forgotten by episode three and Makoto becomes a sort of nation builder after discovering some pristine uninhabited land and granting permission to several races to set up settlements there. Not surprisingly, they adore him as a result. We get the usual 'powerful girls who nevertheless fawn over him so he must be even more powerful' bit. Now that we have gone beyond the semi bizarre set-up of the premise the jokes are modest. For some reason which I quickly forgot Makoto travels to a city and poses as a merchant. Whatever the goal was, he and his harem become distracted by a new task, namely helping a poor girl find her missing sister. I was finding it increasingly difficult to keep track of what was going on, in part because it didn't seem to be worth the effort. I got the sense that perhaps the problem here is that the basic conflict behind the plot hasn't been made clear. I wish the show would clarify things by saying that 'Makoto and his girls must do this ASAP or else this will happen'. Otherwise it's sort of like watching someone else play a video game. You sort of feel like the stakes are so low here that if anything went wrong the gamer could just hit the reset button and start over.
