15 year old Ino Sakura is moving from rural Okayama prefecture to Tokyo, 'The City of Dreams', to become an idol. Her dreams may take a little while to materialize, however, as her new employer, mid-level talent agency Rat Productions, assigns her to the 'Mouse House'. There she is matched with three other less than stellar performers to form a new idol group: Roko Sekino, a former child actor (she's now 19); Hayu Nukui, an unpopular musician; and Nina Maehara, a well-endowed but introverted model.

The title of this anime had led me to expect something truly unusual, maybe even somewhat wacky. Maybe it would take an irreverent jab at the idol industry--something like Zombie Land Saga. But it didn't turn out to be quite as unconventional as I had expected. The moment I first saw Ino the thought occurred to me that I had seen her, or more accurately characters drawn by the same artist, before. The character designs are well drawn and distinctive, but perhaps the most typical thing about the show is that it is not really LOL funny. Jokes about Nina's big boobs will definitely not cut it. Each girl has a quirk which leads to numerous jokes, but the jokes aren't terribly funny and the characters seem kind of stereotyped rather than three dimensional. This is definitely not the first anime about a second-string idol group, after all. The plot doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast either. As a result of this being a silly comedy with unremarkable characters I don't really care all that much whether these girls ever achieve stardom or not. Maybe there is no longterm plot; some episodes consist of two sub-episodes which are only loosely related to each other, and the story as a whole doesn't seem to be building towards any sort of climax. So, not all that original or unconventional, not very funny and not telling an interesting story--what am I supposed to watch for? In episodes three and four a fifth member of the group is recruited; this girl's quirk is that she adores Ino. And, other than that, I can't think of much to say about them. Like most anime comedies, Tart is not terribly funny and doesn't have much of a story to it either.
