The young girl Clara visits her Aunt Gerda and Uncle Drosselmeyer. Her aunt tells her scary stories about the Ragman, a creepy and mysterious man who turns children into mice if they don't go to bed on time. The Ragman is always spying on sleeping children searching for more victims. Just before Clara goes to bed her eccentric uncle gives her a wooden nutcracker doll. He's a bit embarrassed because the only part on the doll that's perfect is the heart, but Clara loves her new doll. She falls asleep but wakes up hearing mice squeaking...

This was a weird one. Believe this is the first Japanese film I've seen making use of stop-motion animation and reminds me of the old Rankin-Bass stop-motion animated specials that come out during the holiday season every December since the 1960s, only Nutcracker Fantasy comes off a bit more unsettling with its use of the animation style with the unnatural way characters can move about at points and the scenery being dark to fit in with how menacing enemies such as the Ragman and the leader of the rats. The film is pretty much Japan's take on the classic Russian ballet performance, albeit laid out to be more in the style of a movie plot and aimed for younger audiences. The film does a solid job with its changes in mood depicting lighter and serious moments throughout its run, particularly while Clara is within the fantasy world while at a castle and the lair of the rats. Overall, perhaps something decent for family viewing during the holiday season with the story being okay and simple enough to follow to engage its intended young audience throughout its 80+ minute run.
