Arata Miyako is a new government worker assigned to the Shinjuku Ward Office's "Nighttime Regional Relations" department. Each of Tokyo's 23 wards has one such department, which were established to solve paranormal and occult-related events. Arata can understand non-human speech that no one else understands, and he encounters a yōkai (supernatural entity) at Shinjuku Gyoen park that calls him Abe no Seimei — the name of a historical Japanese occultist and diviner.

Mayonaka no Occult Kōmuin
While focusing on the supernatural, Midnight Occult Spirit Detectives dabbles more into it like a detective drama as new government worker Arata Miyako becomes part of an agency tasked with investigating supernatural cases with beings of various supernatural origins that they called Anothers, with Arata having the unique ability to be able to understand what they are saying through his Ears of Sand ability inherited from his ancient ancestor, the spiritualist Abe no Seimei. Throughout the series, Arata finds himself having to learn that just because he can understand said supernatural beings doesn't necessarily mean he can effectively reason with them, as many of them don't prioritize the well-being of humans with their goals. The series also takes the time to explore how several other major characters within the government view Anothers and are impacted by their presence. The series has its shortcomings with its visuals being on the subpar side and some elements of the story not being explored in depth compared to others. Still, the series has enough depth to explore with its premise where I'd at least recommend checking the series out at least once.
