Project ARMS focuses on four teens in conflict with the mysterious organization called Egrigori seeking them out due to their ability to use ARMS, nanomachine weapons that alter the form of their wielder's body parts to take on various forms and abilities. The series has the feel of your typical shounen action title in terms of plot setup from the heavy focus on action to the two-dimensional evil baddies among the Egrigori with no regard for anyone but themselves and being overconfident in their abilities to the quest that Ryo and the other ARMS users go through to learn more of their origins and deal with the Egrigori. However, the series does come with a few twists in its plot that help to make things a bit more interesting in its developments with a rather shocking development faced by Ryo in the show's second half and an enemy invasion in the show's final episodes testing the cohesion of Ryo and his allies. Not to mention that Ryo and the ARMS users do undergo varying degrees of personal growth throughout the series as all four learn to cope with their present circumstances and coexist with one another. While not necessarily groundbreaking as a shounen action title, Project ARMS still offered up some solid twists in its developments that led me to gradually take interest in the series in spite of a number of its conventional elements. Considering this is only the first half of the series adapted from its manga source material, I may be tempted to sample its second half at some point.
