Professor Heine Wittgenstein has been asked by the King of Granzreich to serve as a royal tutor, and to educate the four Princes who are not directly in line to inherit the throne. Heine finds them to be quite handsome but also quite spoiled and arrogant, which would explain why numerous tutors have already given up on teaching them anything. The fact that Heine is a miniscule man who looks like a boy certainly will not make his job any easier.

The Royal Tutor is a series that balances comical and serious moments in its focus on Heine Wittgenstein becoming a tutor to four princes who are heirs to their kingdom and have difficult personalities that have caused prior tutors to resign from their role at the palace. The series features Heine taking the time to become acquainted with each of the princes to learn of the difficulties they each have coming from their upbringing, finds ways to motivate them to learn from their flaws, and the four become more mature and accepting of their roles under Heine's direction. Alongside Heine's interactions with the princes, the five do find themselves contending with a scheming lord manipulating the vulnerabilities of Heine and the princes to attempt sabotaging the growth of the princes and Heine's reputation for his own personal gain. While the comedy bits added in the series are hit-or-miss with their delivery, the serious and poignant moments it offers up with Heine and the princes make for the more engaging elements of the series for this reviewer. Overall, I was quite engaged to this series thanks to the chemistry and growth of the princes under Heine's tutoring, and is well worth a look if you are looking for an anime title having something meaningful to express to its audience thanks to what Heine imparts upon the princes.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3336#628]
(Four episodes watched):

Hmmm--a tutor trying to discipline four stuck-up Princes; that seems fairly novel. Could the reason why Heine/Haine looks like a boy possibly be that he's actually a woman, and this will be a reverse harem? Apparently not. Well, I couldn't be certain, but I got the feeling that this show might be going somewhere. There's nothing like serious conversation to develop characters, and we seem to get a good deal of it here--though we're learning more about the Princes than we are about Heine. Was his child-like appearance even necessary? Perhaps it was just to make it clear that physically overpowering any of the Princes is out of the question for him and he'll have to outwit them instead. While they definitely need some discipline, they clearly aren't complete assholes and I got a feeling we would get to like them with time. But I couldn't believe that the climax of this show would be about whether Heine was able to get them to pass a test and graduate. After watching episode one I had little idea what the climax will be about, which was good news at that point--it meant the show wasn't looking predictable and formulaic.

For some reason--perhaps because it was taking me so long to watch episode one of new shows--the idea had crept into my head that this show wasn't all that great and perhaps I should abandon it. But I happened to watch episode two, and was pleasantly surprised at how witty and funny it was. It certainly isn't brilliant or uproariously funny, but it's better than average. Haine has to be a sort of psychologist to understand these arrogant boys and convince them to take his tests and learn their lessons. They have wildly varying personalities which he must adjust to, which is sort of fun to watch. And the jokes are not bad either. I wondered what the long term plot behind this story would turn out to be, but I was fairly confident that there would be a decent one.

Well, let me adjust my opinion: sometimes this show is better than average. Episode four, about Haine taking the Princes on a field trip to observe ordinary people, was pretty dull. I don't recall any LOL moments, or, for that matter, anything more than 'smile' moments. Nor did I sense anything happening which will play a significant part in the longterm plot--which raises the question, just how much of a longterm plot will there be? I think I will drop this show from my viewing schedule. It's looking more like day-to-day hijinks with the rich but ignorant princes than an engaging and interesting long term story. If my time wasn't at premium value right now, perhaps I would continue watching this noteworthy series, but unfortunately it is.
