Giovanni no Shima
Following in the same vain as other World War II focused films like Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen, Giovanni's Island focuses on how a young boy named Junpei and those living on their small island town cope with their home being taken over by Soviet forces following Japan's loss in the war. Much like the mentioned earlier films, Giovanni's Island explores the realities faced by those living through the war via the eyes of a child with addressing issues such as hostilities between Japanese and foreign occupants, Japanese being forced into internment camps, personal losses of family members from said events and a friendship struck between Japanese and foreign children in spite of hostilities between their lands. The series even mixes in story elements from Night on the Galactic Railroad to attempt painting blatant symbolism with the struggles faced by Junpei and Kanta. While the movie believably depicts the harsh reality of such a time for the two brothers and the drama is pretty powerful in many areas, it doesn't really offer much new within a war film focused on war-torn children that would have already been tackled in earlier live-action and animated films like it. Still if you have a love for seeing historical dramas, I would still recommend checking out Giovanni's Island as the characters are fleshed out enough and the history believably depicted to have one genuinely feeling for the struggles faced by Junpei and his family.
