(One episode watched): First of all, I don't like shows that portray organized crime (the Yakuza) as something funny. Strike one. Secondly, I don't like shows that consider violence to be funny as well. Strike two. And finally, I don't like shows with shallow, uninteresting main characters. Strike three. It's obvious as soon as the basic premise is unveiled to us that the girl that Raku once promised to marry will be either longtime classmate Onodera or transfer student Kirisaki. Hurry up and make the revelation, I thought, because this show is completely uninteresting so far. Who gives a damn about a childhood vow when it was made between boring characters? There is plenty of arguing between Raku and Kirisaki, but with them as cardboard as they are it's just plain annoying rather than somehow humorous. As the show neared it's end, I was thinking that there had to be some strange twist coming since it had been so unrewarding so far. This would be the show's last chance to keep me as a viewer. Indeed, a twist comes along, but it's a pretty stereotypical one (you must romance the girl you have quickly come to hate!). Nisekoi seemed totally average (if that) and uninspired, the cavalier attitude to crime and violence offended me, and one episode was more than enough for me. The ED sequence made me think that maybe if both girls somehow had a key to Raku's locket, and it was unclear which was his childhood love (and some decent jokes as well), something could be salvaged here. I bet that if a little skill and talent had been invested in Nisekoi, the 'twist' wouldn't have struck me as stereotypical at all and I would have been perfectly satisfied with it. But shows where you find yourself speculating about changes which might have fixed various problems are not the sort you want to watch. Last updated Wednesday, January 15 2014.
