Ruin Explorers essentially milks tropes of medieval-fantasy adventure titles in its focus on our pairing of Fam and Ihrie, who try to retrieve three magical artifacts to undo a curse that Fam is affected with where she turns into a mouse anytime she casts magic. Their journey leads to cross paths with a prince and another group of adventurers as they later come at odds with the evil magician Ruguduroll, who desires the artifacts for his own ends. The characters in the series do have their roles to fulfill meaning you can't dismiss any of them as worthless in their existence for this series, but the title's rushed pace for its story limits how much depth the characters can be given and leads to the final episode tossing around quite a number of things that were never hinted to or properly addressed in prior episodes which things feel a bit messy with its plot. As it is, Ruin Explorers make for a decent one-night rental if you are looking for a two-hour comedy-adventure title to jump into. But it doesn't have much in terms of rewatchability due to its formulaic story and limited depth.

With all the buy raitings the reviews must be talking about the Japanese version. The R1 version isn't all that it's cracked up to be. I thought it would be as good as Rune Soldier Louie or Slayers. It's not.

I feel caught up in a manga that's much larger (Like Gunsmith Cats) but I haven't read the manga.

The English VA's are really whinny. It's funny and the last 2 episodes are very good, but I just didn't really get this very much. Owells. We don't learn anything about Iriya except her curse. Episode 2 screams 'TIME GAP' as it opens with Fam and Iriya having parted ways.

I suppose it is only fitting that the character designs of this OAV are very similar to those in The Slayers. Like that popular franchise, Ruin Explorers is also a fantasy title, but at only four episodes, pretty short but a lot of fun.

The four episodes of the series are used pretty effectively by the writers. They manage to keep the story moving, inject humorous moments, and provide enough character development to explain certain aspects as they pertain to the story. So while there are some unanswered questions, they aren't the annoying type that I generally complain about. Hat's off to the writers on that. In the hands of good writers, some of the same jokes we've seen in other titles can be retold and still provide a laugh. The writers also get credit for pulling that off here as well.

Another good thing about the series are the characters and the good seiyuu work. While some of the characters could be considered "stock", they are still fun. And with this OAV, the Japanese have their own version of Dastardly and Muttley! I swear, it would have been perfect if the dog in this OAV had laughed like Muttley!

Bottom line: a fun little tale with a nice fantasy adventure and some good laughs along the way. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of this world.

Well, my boyfriend will kill me for this but I was not impressed by this seriesat all. It just RUIN EXPLORERS has been done before (RECORD OF THE LODOSS WARS, SORCERER HUNTERS) and its been done to death! If you like the D&D mystical, adventure, fantasy tales this is as good as any of the kind but dont expect anything more.

Hmm, this one was odd, because it reminded me of Star Wars, without the outer-space combat for some strange reason.
The animation is nice. Fluid, crisp. I liked the character designs, particularly Fam, the cute lil cat-girl. Story-wise, it's above par, with smart dialogue (in the subbed version anyway) and jokes that are actually...brace yourselves...funny! The plot twists are interesting, and the pacing was oh so much better than Slayers.
I give this one a buy, one can get all 4 parts on one DVD, as opposed to 2 tapes (ADV Films, you theives!!) so go DVD if possible. This one is suitable for pretty much all ages, I found nothing particularly offensive, the equivilent of a PG. If you've heard the hype over the oft-compared Slayers, get this instead, the animation is far better, the story is more intelligent, the series flows better and the humor is actually, well...humorous. Enjoy.

This is a good siries, but grrrr, they could have done SOOOOO much more with it! They end it...but...I wish they hadn't! It does have some nodity, witch is disaponting to me!!! It didn't even help the plot (not that that would exuse it anyway)! For that reason I would not watch it with kids but it is good!
