Gosick in having a historical-mystery themed title having comical and serious chemistry between an intelligent, yet smart-mouthed tsundere and her male assistant. Whereas Gosick was grounded in reality and had some ongoing plot developments revolving around the tsundere of its title, Dantalian goes into more fantasy-based territory with Anthony and Dalian trying to retrieve a number of magical books cursing their owners in differing ways and is more episode-based in its storytelling in comparison. The episodic tales vary in their quality and don't offer up as much depth on our leads as they did with Gosick, as their personalities are mostly archetypal. It also suffers from an inconclusive ending as a new pair of characters are introduced in the final episodes of the series to threaten Anthony and Dalian, yet things with them don't get resolved. The one thing that Dantalian would have over Gosick are its slicker visuals as it sports a brighter color palette and more defined details on characters and scenery in comparison to Gosick. Beyond that, Dantalian's mostly forgettable fare and while far from being a gem, Gosick would be a better quality title if you're looking for a historical title having a nice guy/ tsundere character dynamic.

Nothing here, might as well move on. That was the conclusion that I reached before long regarding Dantalian. This show features lots of magical mumbo-jumbo, but little of interest. Apparently I’m supposed to be thrilled by mystical, occult hints of “things that are not meant to be known”, but that doesn’t work when I really couldn’t care less what these things might be. This show is heavy on special effects but light on the plot. Huey doesn’t even bother to ask the strange girl Dalian what her connection to his wealthy grandfather is; that tipped me off that this show wasn’t really interested in telling a coherent story. I guessed Dalian’s secret long before it was revealed. And Huey doesn’t even blink when she tells him that she knows who the grandfather’s murderer is? I stopped pausing to read subtitles during the second half to get this show over with more quickly. This show actually got halfway decent ratings at ANN, but did nothing for me, partly because I don't think 'magic', per se, is automatically interesting. Some shows are not meant to be watched, I would say. Last updated Friday, July 29 2011. Created Friday, July 29 2011. |
