A bit befuddled over what got folks going for this baby years ago as the gags and episode structure are no different from your typical slice-of-life comedy based on a 4-koma manga series, albeit a bit further on the bizarre side than the norm with Namo's existence and some over-the-top moments such as the school principal wrestling a deer. While having a few moments that had me chuckle, I was otherwise mostly indifferent to Nichijou's comedy. I suppose your mileage will vary greatly with this series with how you warm to its comedy.

I really like this show, even more so than Azumanga Daioh. It's just really funny. I'm sure I'm missing some of the jokes, but generally I'm laughing anyway because of how ridiculous everything is. Each episode has 3-5 main segments and a bunch of shorter ones, like "Helvetica Standard", "Short Thoughts", and "Stuff We Think is Cool". There are quite a lot of good characters, but my favorites are probably the Professor and that one guy with the goat (haven't seen him in a while unfortunately). I will definitely keep watching this one. Last updated Tuesday, July 05 2011. Created Tuesday, July 05 2011. |

Things are anything but ordinary here. At first Nichijou seemed like a WTF show to me, with a wild mix of jokes that ranged from very funny (atomic blast) to a lot which I simply didn't 'get'. I wouldn't be surprised if during the first episode something like half of them fell into the latter category. It took a little while for me to get a grip on the premise of this show. Most comedies entertain with a mix of quick jokes and a more-or-less plausible story coming together over the course of the series. Often times the jokes are pretty lame and the story delivers as much entertainment as the humor itself. Here is a show which is just plain funny and doesn't make much effort to tell a story. It doesn't try to be very plausible, either. We have things like the child genius who has built a brilliant android, but insists that she retain a huge wind-up key on her back; The debonair guy who rides a goat to school; The Go-Soccer Club, which attempts to combine a boardgame with a physical sport; the guy who hands out fliers on the sidewalk while wearing an absurd mask/headpiece/whatever; and countless others. Early on I was afraid that Nichijou might well be too off-the-wall for me, but I couldn't help taking a liking to the strange characters as they reappeared time and time again. It is sort of like PaniPoni Dash! on the school comedy craziness scale, only more like a four-frame newspaper manga. The comedy 'sketches' are compartmentalized with a clear start and ending, which has it's advantages. In general it is not nearly as confusing and discordant as I had first thought, and seemed to become more and more amusing as that realization settled in. At times it gets LOLROTF funny--my favorite must have been the time one girl gets whacked over the head with teacher's notebook for failing to complete her homework. What happens might be described as the greatest overreaction to a common anime stereotype ever. There may not be much of a long-term plot to Nichijou, but when the series ends you are sorry to see the principal characters go. P.S: Selamat Pagi seems to mean 'Good Morning' (literally, 'safe morning') in Indonesian. Last updated Saturday, December 17 2011. Created Monday, April 11 2011. |
