(6 shows watched) It's hard to figure out what the creators of this series are trying to do with it. It's sort of a children's show, what with all the ultra-cute doll-like characters, but a lot of the humor is more sophisticated. I'm enjoying it a great deal even though fansubs have been somewhat irregular. All the characters (aside from the two mini-creatures, of course) are ostensibly normal, but they each have their individual perversion that the writers play off against each other, using a large bag of comedy tricks. The exception might be Moriyama-kun (or is he just be keeping his weirdness hidden until later?), who's dead-pan delivery works surprisingly well. This kind of show with wide age appeal is one of my favorite types if done well, and this one is.

I got a good feeling about Potemayo right from the start, what with the silly, absurd classroom situation that the show leaps right into. Initially, I thought Moriyama (Potemayo's caretaker) must be a girl, what with the sailor uniform he was wearing, but it turns out that at this school the only difference between male and female uniforms is whether they wear skirts or shorts. The OP sequence was silly and fun; I immediately ripped the OP and ED songs for inclusion on a homemade CD. For some reason the fansub I was watching didn't explain the joke about how Moriyama came up with Potemayo's name. Background artwork is done in a pleasing watercolor/pastel style. Each episode is broken down into two subplots, in this case entitled "Pote 1" and "Pote 2". The humor can be a bit vulgar--in a good way, i.e, genuinely funny. I mean, the potty humor (Potemayo has some problems with bladder control) in this show is funnier than the ordinary humor in most shows. Having watched episode one, I concluded that Potemayo was definitely funny--but where was it going? At the end of the episode there was still no hint of Pote's origins (unless the 'fridge acts as some sort of interdimensional gateway). And why was there a kawaii grim reaper wandering about? If they were able to talk we might have learned a good deal more, but the truth is that Potemayo doesn't really "go" much of anywhere. Instead this show focuses on simple (but often high quality) humor. The quality of individual episodes varies somewhat, unfortunately. As a whole I would describe Potemayo as good but not great. One more thing--I love the station break sequence in this show (the end of the first half, to be specific); almost always, I watch it twice. When it's at it's best, one of the funniest series of the Summer 2007 season, IMO Last updated Tuesday, October 16 2007. Created Thursday, July 26 2007. |
