I had heard that CPM was in chapter 11, but I thought that they might spring back or perhaps be bought out by someone else ... but with this latest news, they are officially done as an anime company. Can't sell anime if ya don't have the licenses for any series. And just how many of the titles listed below have YOU ACTUALLY SEEN? (I actually own about 10 of their titles and have seen abut 10 more. Is this good or bad?)

ANN news about the last gasp of CPM

Central Park Media's Licenses Offered by Liquidator

The New York company MYC & Associates is liquidating the licenses of the bankrupt anime distributor Central Park Media (CPM). David Kittay, the trustee that the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York assigned to handle CPM's assets, appointed MYC & Associates to handle the liquidation.

MYC & Associates has provided a list of CPM's former assets, including the partial listing of copyrights below. However, CPM did not retain permanent ownership of most of these titles, so many of these copyrights cover only the materials that CPM itself produced, such as subtitles, dubbing, and packaging. Darkside Blues, Grave of the Fireflies, M.D. Geist., and Now and Then, Here and There have already been acquired by A.D. Vision for DVD reissues.

The only CPM title I have in my collection is Grave of the Fireflies, but ADV license rescued that one. And you got the terms of bankruptcy mixed up Jan-chan. CPM filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy where all the company assets get liquidated and their shares get sold to the highest bidder. CPM isn't allowed to come back and resume their business at any time under Chapter 7. That would be if the company filed Chapter 11, 12, or 13 bankruptcy.

Other than Grave, I only seen four other CPM titles: Now and Then Here and There, Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV series and movie), and Descendants of Darkness.

I think I have around 25 of these, but mostly on VHS tapes which I bought second hand to save money.

It takes a pretty piss poor management team to drive a company into the ground so badly that they can't even settle their debts and then sell off what is left for a profit. Chapter 7 means that management is walking away and turning the company over to lawyers for a fire sale auction of all assets in hopes that the $$ is enough to settle their outstanding debts.

Come to think of it, when was the last time that CPM actually licensed and released an 'interesting' anime title? And I am not talking their little porn titles (porn always sells, but the company dealing this dirt might get a bit sticky - as in trouble). Narue's World and Shadow Star were both 2003/2004 titles and I don't think that they were all too successful. So it has been about five years since their last noteworthy title. Well, for a private company, someone must have been a sleep at the wheel for it to get that bad.

Sigh, oh well, I don't think that we will miss this (boring) company.

If history serves me right, CPM was one of the first anime distributors here in the U.S. so older anime fans might be affected by their closure.

It seems the economy is hitting alot of people hard. But it just may be history repeating itself. I have watched a few of these. But I don't think it is all bad news. We just have to hang in there. Shojo Beat is also ending their issues because of economic reasons. Well something that doesn't cost anything is a hello and a smile and hey have a great day. Yours,

This is actually the first time I'm hearing this. It's pretty sad really. Next to Geneon, CPM was probably on my top 5 companies. I've seen a number of their titles (most of them owned by me) and some titles I still have yet to purchase, like the Nightwalker OVA which the Eternal Darkness DVD is now hard to find without busting my wallet. I just hope someone's willing to pickup the rest or at least some that has yet to be put on DVD. I wonder if that means (if given the opportunity) that fansubbers would take some of these titles and re-release them in a torrent or something since the licenses are not really owned by anyone as of late.
