Better is too subjective. Longer? No way. Prince of Tennis is the longest running anime about tennis.

You might want to watch Fighting Spirit Ippo which is about Boxing and is pretty good, or Initial D which is about Drift racing (though not an approved sport).

Sport as primary subject wouldn't attract me to any anime. Then again I wrote 26 episode reviews about Suzuka which might be telling... but it is more romance than sport although track&field is an important part of the story.

Prince of Tennis is very unique in that it is a (1)non-romantic (2)not really about high-school and (3)incorporates technically advanced tennis techniques.

If you are willing to compromise a bit, there are a number of fun sports related series such as H2 (romance/high school baseball), Hungry Heart - Wild Striker (high school soccer), and Gekijouban Hagane no Renkinjutsushi - Shambala wo Yukumono (another high school soccer).

And if you are looking for unique (longer running) series, then there is Yawara! A fashionable judo girl. which is about the adventures of a high school judo girl on her way to the olympics (with a little romance tossed in).

But just to repeat what Forbin has mentioned - Initial D would probably be the best pick (for you - given your 1st posting). It focuses on the student who becomes a mountain-race-driver and does include a lot of technical details about the sport and vehicles that he encounters in his adventures.

From what I read elsewhere, Hikaru no Go might be an interesting alternative.

Good call .... Devil-doll!!!

If I were to tell you about Hikaru No Go, it might sound kinda of uninteresting. A young thirteen-year-old boy finds a GO board in his grandfather's house and gets interested in learning how to play. (GO is a kind of chess/checkers game that is held in very high regard in East.) The board is 'cursed' with the spirit of a long-dead GO master, who befriends the boy and teaches him some of the subtle rules and gambits of the game.

Sound uninteresting? I have seen some 40 episodes of this 75+ episode series and I really like it. Hikaru No Go finds a very strong balance in telling a story of a boy's adventure in growing up and of his having to confront the various personalities of his different opponents, while not becoming mired in the technical minutia of the game. A long five-hour game is summarized in a five minute analysis as to how or how a player decided to surrender and the story quickly moves on.

This is the type of series that one might have to watch ten episodes to decide if you might like it (but, by that point - you probably will have already been sucked into the story and just be waiting for the next episode.)

My only criticism would be ... with no monsters, magic or adventure, this series would win the strongest points with the older-kids crowd who are willing to enjoy the quiet and tense drama of a story - rather than the flash-bang of martial arts competition. (But doesn't this sound kind of like the Prince of Tennis series?)

Playing off the key word of competition .... I might ask that you take a look at the first few episodes of Yakitate!! Japan, which is (1) very technical (2) very competitive .. but be aware that Yakata Japan is a very different type of story (one with a lot more humor), but might still be a story that you might enjoy.

I hope our comments are of some service to you.
