Sunabouzu - 14: Kosuna and Full-Auto

Title:Sunabouzu
Episode:14: Kosuna and Full-Auto
Synopsis
Kosuna, who became Kanta's pupil in order to "become the desert's most skilled beauty", is having second thoughts. After a close call while daydreaming, he takes her to the gunsmith Igarashi to find a firearm with greater stopping power. Igarashi requires Kosuna to take an unusual test to determine whether she can handle a more powerful weapon. While she is at work, Kanta recognizes a rare, original rifle of excellent quality within the shop; as Igarashi explains, virtually all guns available are cheap replicas of "Dark Age" weapons that have been unearthed. Kanta isn't pleased to learn that the rifle belongs to his rival, "The Rain Spider". The Spider stops by, and advises him where to look for real treasures, like this one. Meanwhile, Kosuna has completed her task and is ready to try out the firearm of her dreams...

The magical girl parody with which this episode begins was great. I thought maybe this was going to be a review episode as Kosuna imagines how she would have liked a scene from the first episode to have gone, but it's all original. Kosuna overcomes a crisis of confidence in the career choice she has made, but other than that my impression is that not all that much happens this time around. No doubt we'll hear from the Rain Spider again. The jokes are a bit different in dubbed mode than in subtitled form; definitely some localization has taken place (which is generally bad) but the new ones are fairly funny nevertheless. I'm annoyed by the Negima coming attraction on this Funimation DVD--while watching on a DVD player you cannot skip over it, and when using a computer you can skip it, but the first episode starts automatically in dubbed mode!

P.S: If you're a gun buff you'll think you've died and gone to heaven as you identify AK-47s, Uzis, SKS rifles, an M-14, M-16, Thompson sub-machineguns, and Kosuna's favorite, the FN rifle (a virtually identical rifle made an appearance in a recent episode of Angel Heart). For citizens of Japan, seeing these weapons in an anime is about as close as they'll ever get to the real thing (not counting pellet gun replicas).
