Kowloon Generic Romance - 10:

Title:Kowloon Generic Romance
Episode:10:
Synopsis
We see a flashback to an incident in which Kujirai B had to go to the shady Bai Yuen Shan Tower district on business. Kudo was upset by her doing something so dangerous on her own. Back in the present day, Yulong tries to convince Xiaohei that it's OK to kill Kujirai since she's a 'generic' and shouldn't exist to begin with. When that doesn't work he tries to blackmail him with video of him crossdressing. Yulong can't 'see' generic Kowloon, which 'replicated the Kowloon from three years ago' (perhaps that's why he won't just kill Kujirai himself). Apparently, the film Yulong has is of Xiaohei's own generic; "Supposedly a generic and the original can't coexist", but it would seem that there are exceptions. Yulong says that with the help of Gene Terra Xiaohei could go back to how he looked three years ago, which is tempting. Later, Yaomay comes upon a dejected Xiaohei. After a little talk he declares "I'd never want to do anything that makes you feel bad!" and runs off--apparently he has decided not to kill Yaomay's friend, Kujirai. Yaomay gets a cell phone call from Kujirai. She has tried on Kujirai B's old glasses and finds that when she does so she sees strange, random images of things that seem to have happened to Kujirai B years ago. This is freaking her out, and she and Yaomay get together to discuss them. Among them is what seems to be Kujirai B reaching out and peeling a paper 'talisman' off an alley wall. Yaomay cannot see these images when she looks through the same glasses, and there is no audio. Later, Yaomay is ready to take notes while Kujirai puts the glasses on again. Kujirai sees the Bai Yuen Shan Tower sign and they go there in hopes of finding out why Kudo was so opposed to Kujirai B going there alone and perhaps why she killed herself. Yaomay feels that something is odd, and that she is forgetting something important. They find the spot Kujirai saw through the glasses earlier. Kujirai peels one of the countless talismans off the wall, like Kujirai B did, and finds the inscription '403 Forbidden' on the back. Later, she tells Gwen about these images she has been seeing through the glasses. He says he doesn't know much about the true cause of Kujirai B's death but also that he wasn't really fond of her to begin with. He felt he couldn't tell what she was thinking and therefore couldn't trust her. It wasn't so much that he felt she was deceiving him as "There was always a scent of death about her". He regrets not comforting Kudo more after she died. Gwen also mentions that while they look alike, he has become convinced that the personalities of Kujirai B and present-day Kujirai are 'nothing alike'. He also says 'There's a chance your presence itself might be hurting Kudo". To himself, Gwen thinks "This is all in such bad taste. I wonder who's behind it". Xiaohei and Gwen happen to meet, and it would seem that they know each other and are not friends. Kujirai remembers how Kudo briefly visited her on the anniversary of Kujirai B's death, and wonders if it would be better if she were not around him. Yaomay asks if she regrets being in a relationship with Kudo but she decides that she doesn't. Gwen grabs Xiaohei and pulls him into an alley. "Kowloon was demolished and now it's reappeared" Xiaohei says. "It's impossible to stay away". Xiaohei's generic passes by, startling Gwen. Kujirai looks up 403 code, and finds it means 'No permission to access'. She tells Kudo that she thinks they should go back to just being 'colleagues'. "I am not going to hurt you" she vows. She peels another talisman off a wall but this time gets '202 Accepted', which means 'the request has been accepted but processing has not been completed'. Trying to sum up her situation to herself, she says "I'm a person who shouldn't exist, existing in a place that shouldn't exist. Why was the Second Kowloon replicated? Why do I look exactly like Kujirai B? Why did she kill herself before getting married? What was the true cause of her death?" She has peeled 30 talismans off Kowloon walls, and finds that 20 were blank on the back, 9 had the 403 Forbidden code and one the 202 Accepted one. She recognizes a spot she saw through the glasses, peels a talisman, and it says "Don't look for it anymore". After eating a piece of (outside?) candy Yaomay remembers her trip to Hong Kong.
Comments
The computer codes have been a prominent feature of the OP sequence since episode one, and here they finally appear. This is feeling like a two-season show since there are only a couple of episodes left and we don't seem to be anywhere near solving all the mysteries. Why does Yulong want to kill Kujirai? he seemed more reasonable than Miyuki an episode or two ago. How does Kowloon food have the effect of suppressing memories?
