Kowloon Generic Romance - 06:

Title:Kowloon Generic Romance
Episode:06:
Synopsis
Miyuki Hebinuma's father remarks that "You also secured vessels for orthodox clones" and clones can be "Not just Zirconians". There's definitely cloning going on, and more than one kind of it. Miyuki abruptly breaks up with his lover, Gwen, apparently as a result of something that happened at the meeting with his father. "Revenge isn't what you really want to live for, is it?" Gwen remarks. Kujirai B once said "My story is not going to end, nor will it continue", whatever that meant. Yaomay meets Gwen and is entranced by his handsomeness. But she realizes who he is and arranges a meeting between him, her and Kujirai. "There are two of me? I'm a clone?" Kujirai asks. We don't get a definitive answer. Gwen mentions that there was once a 'second one' of him, too, but says it was not a clone. It is now 'gone' (dead?) and he considers it a 'fake'. Gwen says Kudo didn't kill Kujirai B. Yaomay says she briefly returned to her 'old appearance' recently (as the younger version of Yangli?). She asks Gwen to meet Kudo and make certain that he is 'real' (not a clone?). Gwen is certain that he is, but agrees anyhow. "Who could have done something so cruel?" he wonders. In an interview, Miyuki declares that "In order to achieve immortality, concrete memories matter more than the body. Generic Terra makes that possible. If you lose your memories due to an accident or sickness you can be restored to yourself by syncing with the memories stored within generic Terra". Sounds like GT is a service which stores peoples' memories just in case, but those memories can also be used to create clones, probably without the permission of their original owners. Later, Miyuki goes to visit 'Dr. Wong' and asks him if he can become pregnant(!). Turns out that he has both male and female genitalia. Wong says that is impossible. "What about becoming a vessel?" Miyuki asks. The doctor thinks this is a form of in vitro fertilization, but doubts that it would work either. The doctor also warns Miyuki not to 'live for revenge'. A silver haired young man, 'Yulong', happens to stop by. He says that Miyuki's father wants to restore his dead son, using Gene Terra's memory backup function. I got the impression that the person Miyuki wants to take revenge upon is his father. He says he intends to create a 'duplicate' (clone?) of this son, except this duplicate will lack the memories his father wants most, which should devastate him. Not only do those who have passed on still exist within Generic Terra, "they replicated the second walled city of Kowloon that no longer exists" Miyuki claims. We need to know how that works to move forward". Yulong remarks that "While some can see the restored Kowloon, others can't". Miyuki wonders why Gwen, who spent less time in Kowloon (up until the 'second city' was destroyed) than he has can see it while he can't. Miyuki is surprised to learn that Yaomay lives within Kowloon 'when she's actual flesh and blood' (which implies that almost everyone else isn't). Miyuki is surprised to learn that Yaomay, a 'flesh-and-blood' person, lives in Kowloon. “That means even people who don't know Kowloon can see it” he remarks. Apparently flesh-and-blood people and/or people who don't 'know' Kowloon (whatever that means) shouldn't be able to 'see' it (whatever that means). This show is frustrating because there are so many cryptic comments and so few explanations that allow us to make sense of them. As a result it's a lot of work to struggle through it. “If you make something like Generic Terra right above Kowloon, it's only natural that things would be affected somehow” Yulong says. Yulong theorizes that GT “disturbed the flow of energy, then it resonated with something and materialized an illusion of the second Kowloon”. And only those who likewise resonate can see it. “Well, human beings can't help but see what they want to see”. The GT corporation's pitch seems to be that Kowloon will be whatever the customer wants it to be. But that doesn't explain Yaomay. Miyuki admits that they don't know what this 'something' that Kowloon 'resonated' with is. Yulong points out a new assistant who likes to wear all sorts of strange costumes. He thinks to himself that Miyuki may be in danger of being 'swallowed up' by Kowloon. Elsewhere, Kujirai wonders if perhaps she should leave Kowloon, since she might be keeping Kudo from moving on with his own life. He gives the impression that he'd rather she stayed. An explosion from the direction of the Sui Hing tower rocks the city.
Comments
A lot to digest in this episode! I wrote an entire page worth of notes then had to watch the rest later because I had run out of space. Keeping track of what's going on in this show is hard work. What does it mean to 'see' the city? Is it all an illusion? Is a new, improved version of it created every now and then?
