The five 86ers serving with the Giad military get a break after their fantastic accomplishment in destroying Morpho. A new unit is being formed around them, the 'Independent Mobile Force', which will presumably serve as a fire brigade to deal with crises. It will have a foreign officer as commander--guess who that will be. Shin pays a visit to Eugene Rantz' grave. It turns out that thanks to the stubborn resistance of the 86ers and an intervention by Giad forces (who, not long ago, seemed to be on their last legs), the Legion has been driven back from San Magnolia. But the so-called Republic, which conducted the persecution (and had plans for the outright genocide) of the 86ers, has been overthrown. I had figured that the next season of this show would be about the liberation of San Magnolia, but no, it has already happened. It kind of feels like the heroic stuff is being bypassed and all that will be left will be the ugly lingering hatred and reprisals that are sure to come if this world is anything like ours. The show will probably bypass that as well and focus on the adventures of the Independent Mobile Force back in Giad. Maybe yet another distant relative of Shin will show up as a Legion shepherd. Lena finally meets Shin and the others; it would be easy to forget that before they vanished she had only talked to them via Para-RAID, not met them face-to-face. Whereas season one ended with a cliffhanger--is everyone dead?--season two ends in a more subdued manner. There's talk that the Legion is by no means defeated, and may regain numerical superiority, but for now things are going well. Despite all the things about this show that bug me, I couldn't help but be pleased and eager for season three.
