Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova - 6: Unknown Assault

Title:Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova
Episode:6: Unknown Assault
Synopsis
Isabelle Kronkite awakens back at her office building but with her memory of the recent past somehow erased. Her editor is certain that this proves that, as she suspected, "Dancouga's secret base is around Japan's sea". However, he forbids her to go looking for it again. While the Dancouga team is off on a mission, Seimii asks counsellor Ruuriruri to listen to a problem of her own. After the mission, Sakuya and Kurara are arguing; he doesn't like his role as pilot of the Rhino Beast mech. Sakuya asks Seimii to meet him in secret after work; she misunderstands what he's getting at. Commander Tanaka tells the crew that "Our main sponsor is throwing a party to debut it's new product in Tokyo", and they are all invited. He also makes the tantalizing comment that "If you attend, perhaps one or two of your questions will be answered"...

I have mixed feelings about this episode. Early on, I was loving it--when Sakuya asked Seimii to meet him in secret, I could see where that was going, and was grinning from ear to ear. You don't often get this sort of writing in mecha anime! It was interesting that the combat that took place during the mission was almost completely skipped in favor of comedy and character development, which I like. When the party was announced I was really into the story and eager to see where it was going. The thought occured to me that this episode was even better than usual. About what happened at the party--the talk with "Mr. FS" and the fight that broke out with intruders--I'm uncomfortable. It's hard to define, but perhaps the problem is that in this show which has skillfully rationed out revelations in the past, too much information is given away too quickly (the commander said "perhaps one or two of your questions will be answered"). And what's more, all this information confuses me more than makes sense. Before the mystery of the Ardaigun is solved in a satisfactory way, are we leaping ahead to a new opponent? Was this intentional, or has somebody gotten careless? The fight could have been more slick and less predictable; the bad guys didn't seem all that dangerous, for one thing. But there were good points (the concealed weapon Kurara produced had me LOLing). It was revealed that Hidaka is definitely the "Main Pilot", but I think all of the characters are getting a decent amount of development. For example, Johnny meets Eida Rossa, who has a curious reason to be attracted to him. Sakuya is unhappy with playing second fiddle (as he sees it) within the Dancouga team. And of course even Seimii gets some attention this time. So, to sum up, I am uncertain whether or not I like the turn the plot has taken--only time will tell. I'm eager for the next episode (as always) but will go into it with a bit of trepidation.
