Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova - 5: Demon Wall of Sorrow

Title:Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova
Episode:5: Demon Wall of Sorrow
Synopsis
During their mission to South America, the Dancouga crewmembers are mystified by the appearance of another mech which looks much like their own but is red in color. Having nearly reached their time limit, they have no choice but to disengage from their battle with the Deiga. The Ameria Captain takes the newcomer to be an "ally of justice", but it has other ideas. Back at base, the team demands that the Commander explain the "Red Dancouga". He says that all he knows is that it seems to have the same objective as they do, i.e, to be an ally of the weak. Seimii believes the Red Dancouga has only a single pilot. Isabelle Kronkite believes she knows where Dancouga is based, and borrows a helicopter to fly to the site. Sakuya and Kurara slip into the Documents Room and find curious records regarding the bloodtypes of Dancouga pilots. The Commander reports the incident with the Red Dancouga--or "Ardaigun" as he calls it--to his own superior, who comments that "Now all the cast is together"...

I wish I could explain exactly why, but I love this show! When Kurara came up with a desperate idea to defeat the enemy mech in Southeast Asia, the thrill was palpable. I almost missed the fact that the idea worked, but not thanks to her--good thing the Commander commented on what happened. There are some repetitive transformation shots, and animation as a whole isn't as good as some of the other mecha series that have come out recently, but I love Dancouga anyhow. What's the deal with Ardaigun? Is it a friend? An enemy? That's one of the cool things about this show--it maintains an excellent balance between what the viewer is and is not told. There's enough mystery to be intriguing and leave you wanting more, but not so much as to be confusing and frustrating. The comedy is great too, including the gags that take place during the previews of upcoming episodes.
