Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova - 3: The Guiding Sword

Title:Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova
Episode:3: The Guiding Sword
Synopsis
Commander Tanaka discusses the new team of Dancouga pilots with Seimii-san and counselor Ruuriri (who has an interesting opinion of them). Meanwhile, the four complete another mission successfully; afterwards, they learn from Seimii that Dancouga contains a self-destruct mechanism that will activate if it's time limit is exceeded. Kurara asks why they were selected to serve as the new set of pilots, seeing as they have a hard time obeying orders. They are given a lecture on Japan's 21st-century history, especially the Great Kanto Earthquake which devastated it's economy and left it a third world nation in the eyes of the world. Lots of information, but not the answer Kurara was looking for. The four are summoned for their next mission, to an island nation in Europe. Unknown to them, the Commander has been repeatedly reporting on their progress to a mysterious superior. "Dancouga's battles will become even more fierce and cruel" the man comments. "I'm looking forward to it"...

I really love this show, and as Busou Renkin comes to an end I think this will be the one I shift my focus to. Dancouga has such a fun feel to it; I have little trouble suspending disbelief and taking it seriously (and I'm continually giggling, too). The action scenes rock; they make me feel like a little kid again. Yet this show is also able to make fun of mecha stereotypes and poke fun at itself, which is a trait I especially enjoy in anime. What with neat touches like the crew seeing just how nasty combat can really be, I'm confident that a well thought-out plot is coming together. A number of intriguing questions have been raised: Where did Dancouga come from and why is it so strong? Why haven't the pilots been given any answers to their questions? Why were they chosen? Can the Commander's superior be trusted? And what did he mean when he said "Eventually, they will appear"?
