Busou Renkin - 18: The Escape

Title:Busou Renkin
Episode:18: The Escape
Synopsis
"Kazuki was presumed dead after Captain Bravo executed Operation Re-Kill; however, thanks to his energy drain ability he managed to survive. Gouta, seeing the depth of Tokiko's concern for Kazuki, fought Hitawari of Team Re-Kill for her sake. The battle resulted in a draw, ending with Gouta's escape. And thus, Tokiko, Kazuki and Gouta's escape began".

Captain Bravo faces an inquiry and is reprimanded for failing to kill Kazuki and retrieve the black kakugane. In his defense, Warrior Chitose points out what an unusual opponent Victor III (Kazuki) was, and how precious Bravo's skills will be in the future. General Sakaguchi Shousei decides to be lenient; Bravo is to resume hunting Kazuki while Chitose will take charge of locating Victor I. Tokiko, Kazuki and Gouta are in a forest; the two boys still aren't getting along so well, much to Tokiko's annoyance. She announces they are headed to the Newton Apple Girl's Academy, where she retrieved the black kakugane. She went there to investigate reports of a miraculous stone which could heal wounds--a kakugane. She secured it after being told by a strange figure that she could have it "since it used to belong to you people anyway", but she must never destroy it, since that would result in disaster. Tokiko is certain that this mysterious person must know a good deal about the black kakugane, and hopefully about how to undo it's effects. Since the Regiment has lost track of the trio, Oka can't locate them for Papillon. In that case, he asks where Team Re-Kill is. Chitose deduces the fugitives' destination and informs the Team. On a mountain road, Ikusabe slams on the brakes of their Hummer. "We have a guest" he announces...

At this point I'm left uncertain as to whether I like the way things are going. Papillon taking on Team Re-Kill seems foolhardy (why not just follow them?); Hitawari and Negoro leaving Ikusabe to fight alone seems equally foolish. I really like shows where the characters' decisions are complex yet make sense. Is the plot moving too fast? Is there enough depth? Are two simultaneous fights overdoing it, or will they be awesome? Only time (the next episode, that is) will tell. Sometimes yet another fight seems like more of a nuisance than a thrill, as it distracts from the development of an intriguing plot. The music seems a bit mismatched at times, having the effect of overdramatizing things. When Ikusabe employed a little alchemic trick of his, I could only exclaim "Oh God!". It's good to see Shuusui again. Yet another strange character (the guy from Newton Apple) is introduced--this show has quite a cast. Plus, now there will be yet another plot strand, namely Chitose and her team searching for Victor I. So, too early to say how well things are going. I'm eager to move on to the next episode--I just pray things work out in a cool, fun manner.
