Busou Renkin - 13: The Foetal Movements of Death

Title:Busou Renkin
Episode:13: The Foetal Movements of Death
Synopsis
Kazuki reveals himself to Mahiro and her friends, then returns to Tokiko and the battle with the altered human type homunculi. Okakura, Daihama and Rokumasu expose Suzuki, who is abandoned by Dr. Butterfly. Kazuki and Tokiko, who were hastily misjudged by everyone, now find themselves being cheered on by the other students. Kazuki has attained amazing strength which surprises even Tokiko, and the homunculi are taking a beating; they recombine into two gigantic ones. Meanwhile, Captain Bravo finds that there is more than one Moonface. Dr. Butterfly demands to know why Papillon has appeared at the school. After being described as a "laggard", he's there to demonstrate the alchemic powers he has acquired by securing a kakugane; namely, his "Near Death Happiness" wings and "Black Powder Arms Alchemy". He's also there to fight it out with Kazuki, one on one. Dr. Butterfly resents being ignored as they exchange challenges; "I'll show you the strength that I, homunculus Chouno Bakushaku have accumulated over the last century as founder of L.X.E!"...

Stretch:
I'm still uncomfortable with the previously cloak-and-dagger war between the homunculi and alchemic warriors being exposed to countless witnesses; it just feels like it'll be a lot more difficult to keep semi-plausible this way. Another problem is that all these new people, who have just seen freakish monsters with their own eyes, are taking it so seriously and adjusting so rapidly, whereas I'd probably panic. The schoolyard fight was kind of sloppy--it didn't seem very believable and the timing was poor; like homunculi standing back to give the characters time to banter among themselves. However, the moment when Kazuki and Tokiko realise that everyone is cheering them on was thrilling, in a corny sort of way. All-in-all, I was dismayed by this episode at first and only watched half at my first sitting. But the second half looks up as Dr. Butterfly and Papillon face off. There does seem to be a well thought-out ongoing plot to this show, which is good to see. Looks like things won't stay undercover from now on, unless a way can be found to hush up the destruction of an entire school and suppress a lot of people's memories. No matter what happens, the goofy characters in this show like Moonface are priceless ("New Moon" was especially good), and make it worth watching all by themselves!
